Mini review of Huawei FreeBuds
Summary
Bought a pair of
Huawei FreeBuds at $148. Overall happy with the purchase. Good price to performance ratio. If you are an audiophile or have certain level of expectations, I doubt this is for you. If you are a casual user who wants decent music and video, this pair of buds should work out well.
Aesthetics
Very compact, and lid is secured with magnets. The charging case comes with Type-C for charging instead of the usual Micro-USB. It is made of good quality plastic, and it does not feel cheap. The buds looked classy with the semi glossy outlook. The buds are also secured with magnets in their own slots. Overall good build.
Usage
When you place the buds into your ear, and when the bud senses it, you will hear soft beeps. When either of the buds are removed from ear, the music will pause automatically. When battery is low, it will beep in a few intervals before it is completely flat. There is also a battery icon on your phone that indicates the battery level. The icon is just a scale, and does not show battery left in percentage. No indicate of battery left in the charging case too. You can find the app
FreeBuds Assistant in Play Store, but it only serves a platform for your operating instructions, and to update the firmware.
Sound
I should go on to say that it is good based on my usage and expectations. Tested on mobile phone's default music player with no preset, sound is decently acceptable, with above average bass and vocals. To some, I believe it may sound a little hollow. When used with Poweramp, you will get a better sound experience, which also depends on your preferred preset. Tried the bass preset; it is obvious that the bass has been enhanced to a better level, overall sound experience is much punchier, and it does not sound as hollow as before. If you are watching videos on your mobile phone, you will be pleased to know that there is no noticeable latency or sound delay. Not sure how it will pan out if you are streaming videos.
Gripe
For my past buds, it will fit nicely without much positioning adjustment. However, for this pair, it seems that I have to adjust it till I get the position right for proper isolation. If not positioned well, leakage will sound very obvious. Or maybe I will just have to get used to the form factor of these buds. Next, as with all bluetooth buds, users may experience interference leading to disconnection or distortion. This buds will usually recover the connection in less than a second. It does not happen often, and it is not a deal breaker in my opinion. This scenario happened when the phone is within my reach, and not an attempt to test how far the connection can go before getting disconnected.
Conclusion
If you have been waiting for a step up to a true wireless earbuds, this may work out for you. The good thing about this pair of buds is that you can actually try it out before you buy it. Ask for a demo pair from the retailer, try it out, and see if it fits you. But remember, testing in an enclosed indoor environment is different from the outdoor.
