Some preliminary comments about the DCS-6010L

Went down to Sitex and got the DCS-6010L. Funny how vendors always assume that they know more than you. Told them that I am getting one to test it out, but they suggested some other models. I said I have a few different models/brands, and they are sceptical. When I show them my mobile phone app with the 15+ cameras, only then did they believe me.

Anyway, I came back and managed to set it up quickly. It does not have the IR cut-filter, which means that in a totally dark room, you can't get any image. But the low light is quite good, and a small amount of light can give a decent enough picture.

The fish-eye lens is quite unique. You can set it up to view the image in a fish-eye mode i.e.

The camera is put on a shelf, and you can see that the viewing angle is 180 degrees all around. However, the perspective takes a bit getting used to (esp. if you have not tried fish-eye photography before). But no fear... from the browser, you can choose an alternate mode, which shows you the picture from several different angles:

This is the default view. Note the different rotational view. What I found out is that you can actually rotate each panel. Haven't quite figure out how to get a full panel of images covering 180 degrees all around yet.

Now, the question is... will I be able to get it to appear on my mobile phone via an app? Dlink brochure indicated that there is no iOS or Android support. Maybe they mean they don't give you an app with the camera.

Using the excellent Robert Chou's IP CAM VIEWER, I was able to see the image. In fact, by choosing various Dlink camera profiles, I could see both the fish-eye view as well as the the quad-panel view.

The biggest downside of this camera is that it does not have IR capability. However, it does have a built-in speaker (saw that when I opened up the camera), so those looking to use 2-way audio will not need to add another external speaker.

This thread is created to talk about wireless IP cameras. The aim is to consolidate various posts that has been written on HWZ about wireless IP cameras for users interested in wireless IP cameras.

My own fascination with wireless IP cameras started when my daughter was born. I bought a baby monitor, but found that while I could only hear sounds, I couldn't see what was going on. After some research on the Internet, I came to know about wireless IP cameras. Basically, a wireless IP camera is much like a webcam, except that it is connected wireless instead of through a USB port.

I am no expert on wireless IP cameras. My experience was as a father who wanted to be able to watch his kids while in another room. I am keen to share what I know, and hopefully, other users can do the same.
Thank for sharing

Nice thread on IP cams. I'm also interested in IP cams, just that I have to control what I buy as I don't have enough storage space to keep them.

I just bought a DCS-942L during Sitex. The image quality is amazingly good IMO. Wish I had the budget to get the Aztech WIPC402. My last IP cam purchase was in 2007/8 i think, the DCS-2120.

A pity the DCS-2120 cannot support WPA2 so now it's either running on unsightly wires or powered off most of the time.

Just to share with everyone who have been asking me if the VStarcam H6837WIP's AUDIO LISTENING is good or not. I've asked the Distributor to upload something so that you guys can watch it yourself prior to ordering.

Here's MARIX latest LIVE Streaming Clip with AUDIO LISTENING.
So, don't ask me anymore if AUDIO of camera is good or not. :s13:

You judge for yourself.

Is the Prolink PIC1003WP good? It seems that there are several other models from Dlink, SMC that offers similar functions but at a much lower price?

I think if you google, can find their contact. When MCL came in, they forced the price of Foscam down over the IT Show.

Which app are you using? The icon should be a close up lens with GREEN banner at left bottom showing 264. APP name should be P2PCam264

You can consider CCTV with 30 days of recording. 1 to 2 cameras.
You need to subscribe to a broadband plan to stream out to iPhone.
Try calling MARIX, and get a quote if you want. Their setup will include
trunking.

Otherwise, if you want Plug and Play, their H6837WIP IP camera not bad,
LIVE streaming, you can go to their office and take a look at their sample
streaming. Only thing is only 7 days of recording on microSD card.

So how does FOSCAM compared to MARIX?

Cuz I am looking to setup some IP cam at home to watch over my baby who will be taken care of by FDW.. I'm hoping to get a CAM with wireless recording capabilities, so that I can avoid installing ugly trunking all over the house.

If you ask me, comparing features wise.

1. VStarcam is PnP, easy setup, Foscam wise, you need to know a bit more IT to setup.
2. LIVE Streaming via mobile apps, ease of use vs Foscam's view via safari, not good to use web buttons or third party (frame by frame apps)
3. FREE DDNS vs paying addition USD20 for DDNS each year

As for trunking depends on where you place your cameras, both cameras using only near 1.2-1.5 metre cables, if not long enough, you still need to get extension kits, MARIX does supply 3 metres one and if you need mounting, they can do trunking and mounting plus configuration. If U wanna buy Foscam, get from MCL, they sell cheaper for sure (from the price they sell at last sitex) and have presence in SG. Otherwise, you can consider getting VStarcam from MARIX cos its better in terms of features listed above.

Ultimately, its up to you.
