Hi all, I'm looking to buy my first pair of formal shoes, something simple like a black cap toe oxford. Any recommendations? Budget $250-300. Preferably can get it by 1st week of Dec as I'm starting work then. I'm not sure about my sizes, width etc as well as its my first pair of formal shoes!

Read through the thread and seems like Loake 1880 is a popular option, but Robinsonshoes doesn't seem to have loake in stock anymore, and other online websites prices a bit outside my budget.

Any opinions on Barker, Meermim etc? Meermin looks quite good and within my budget (175 usd)

Y not support local? Edetal. Fits yr budget and u get to try yr size

I seriously think Loake Aldwych is the most sensible starter shoe for most people.
Comfortable last and reasonably priced.

Unfortunately there is no sure way to know you can only do a guesstimate for your first pair

Aldwych is quite a forgiving last.
I am between normal and wide feet but fits it nicely (my experience).

I would recommend Carlos santos (though may be slightly out of your range). Unfortunately no where to try in SG I think. Available on Skoaktiebolaget and afinepairofshoes.

I would suggest oak/dark brown oxfords in a rubber sole. The only time where black shoes make more sense than brown shoes is when you wear black pants.

Yeah its pretty much out of my budget.. haha

I actually wanted to get from edetal, so I sent them an email. But apparently they don't carry ready-to-wear shoes now, and I need the shoes earlier than the 8 weeks it takes to make (+ they seem to be having issues with how long they take from facebook).

Can wait for sale at herring or pediwear.
Size wise can measure on brannock or try on at metro (centrepoint/paragon), tho do note they do not have half sizes.
Recommend you do the latter.

Good thing about knowing your size on the capital last, is that you get a pretty good gauge of what size you can wear in most other brands.

Do take note when ordering frim pediwear. Anything above size 10uk, pediwear take forever to ship.

I tried to buy 2 shoes from them. First time 2 week still not shipped it, straight cancel. Second time I waited 1 month. I asked why so long they say no in stock and is ordering from factory. Then factory give them 2 left shoe... pattern many many I cancel again.

Sent from Samsung SM-G950F using GAGT

More likely pediwear than herring. Herring is increasingly selective in offering discounts and typically only on their own brand range.

Made a few purchases from pediwear with my last purchase about 1.5 years ago and experiences have been positive. They are quite upfront on waiting time if there is a stock issue.

Care to share a picture or two?

Nothing much to see from a pair of wet shoes. Anyway I inadvertently stretched the leather and expanded the shoes by stuffing it too tightly with newspaper, now the shoes feel quite loose.

Advice for others in future, be aware about stuffing your wet leather shoes too tightly with newspaper (or whatever drying agent you choose) causing the shoe to expands. Unless of course you’re trying to expands the shoes.

If I may elaborate further, resoling would entail removing the lock stitches holding the outsole to the welt itself, replacing the outsole and stitching it back to the welt. There is a limited number of times you can do this before the welt itself becomes unsuitable for re-stitching.

Re-welting as mentioned removes the welt, which is held to the leather uppers and insole, and all layers beneath it (cork filling, outsole). Again there is a limited number of times you can re-craft the shoe before the leather uppers/insole becomes unsuitable for re-welting.

In any case it’s not common for local cobblers to offer re-soling/re-crafting services and if they do, it’s likely to be sent overseas.

One solution that helps to prolong the life of the leather outsole/reduce its wear is to add a layer of rubber to the front half of the shoe, colliloquially termed “Topy”. Those keen on Topy-ing your soles can check out my carousell page @pulloutnow for competitive pricing info and to ask me more questions if you have

Re-soling and Re-welting are actually 2 entirely different things altogether.

Resoling can be done by a competent cobbler, with a generic last inside the shoe during the process.

During this process, the welt is not removed.

Re-welting / Re- crafting requires the original last the shoes were made on, and the old welt is pulled (thus unravelling the inseam) and a new welt is then attached, new filler placed, and a new outsole attached.

For those of you who are looking to get a topy done, I fully recommend Shukey at Far East.

Good work, by a professional who knows what he's doing and talking about, has plenty of experience, and at a very reasonable price.

Have had several pairs topied by him.

They don't? Then what is Edwin doing?

Only customs then? Because what I heard was he no longer does bespoke as well.
