I'm looking for a pair of brogues with low rubber soles that are comfortable for business travel (I walk a lot). I've been searching high and low but could not find something suitable to replace my old pair. If anyone knows where I can find a pair like the ones in the picture below, please let me know. These Paul Smith are too expensive for me. My budget is under S$200. Thanks!

Calling all US 9 D wearers, you might like this.

Just posted a dozen or so pairs of Vass, Alfred Sargent, Carmina, O'Keefe, Gucci, Common Projects etc for sale as part of my wardrobe clearance.

Prices start fro $200 up. Check it out, these are a bargain at today's retail prices that only seem to go up.

Can PM me your asking prices for the Carminas?

I see. By any chance, do you know if Carlos Santos' sizing stays true to the usual international sizing? I'm usually a 41.5EU, so is it safe for me to order in the same size for Carlos Santos shoes?

Sizing will depend on the last you want. Best is email the retailer to check. From what I know, some lasts like the 234 is big and may need to size down by half. At least that's for me.

Leather flaw in new Loake Aldwych, in the toecap area =((
(I know some flaws are to be expected at this price point, but imo there shouldnt be such an obvious defect in the most prominent part right?)
xo2rle.jpg

dunno if this can be polished over?
I emailed pediwear, contemplating returning.

Its almost nitpicking to consider this a flaw...

U cross ur legs in office, shake abit and ur toebox will likely get scuffed to an even more severe degree than this

Just creme, and wax polish and you're good to go again

Hi guys, I am looking for a pair of black leather shoes to wear with the tux for my wedding. I have been wearing Aldo shoes since I started work. Since this is a special occasion, I am looking for a better option to wear on the day. Much appreciated if someone could provide some recommendations. Budget is up to SGD 1000.

For singapore retailers:

Antonio Meccariello. Can get from yeossal (local retailer. PM me to get a contact). He carries 2 models, I have the lower tier model ($600+) but the higher tier principes 3 ($900+) has better leather. Good to try to see fit.

Enzo Bonafé. I recall Seamless Bespoke (17 circular road) having a sale on their black hidden seam oxford. Limited sizes. Retail is $758 if I recall correctly. Not sure what the sale price is.

I prefer the finishing of Antonio Meccariello.

As the other 2 gentlemen recommended, contact the 2 retailers. As you are 'upgrading' from Aldo and with a nice budget, consider getting 2 pairs of different styles instead. 1 for the day and 1 for the evening event.

If this is the first pair of leather soles, do have a walk with it. Topy if necessary, the last thing you want on your big day is having shoes surprises.

If you are getting anything with a fiddleback waist (ie Antonio Meccariello) and planning to topy, suggest you topy at ed et al. Don’t think I’ve seen a better topy than them in singapore. Can check out the pics I posted previously for

Thank you guys. All the advices are much appreciated. I am headed to their shops tomorrow.

If I cut the budget by half (so that I can get two pairs for the day), what would you recommend? Or I should just go for Enzo Bonafe and AM anyway since they are worth the money?

2. I am now looking for the second pair for the day - probably a double monk strap. What would you recommend?

3. Would I save any money ordering from overseas and ship the shoes to Singapore? If so, which website woulf you order from?

Lucky Farmer,

Congratulations on your big day.

When buying a pair of shoes, especially during your first forays into good footwear, I think it's good to pay very particular attention to what fits you, and feels the most comfortable for you.

Your shoes should be snug, but not cause any hot spots, at the heel, instep, toe box, and the vamp (area of the shoe between the laces and the toecap).

When you walk, you should feel the heel of the shoe cupping your own heel nicely. The laces (on an oxford) should be just slightly apart (about half a cm or slightly more) when laced fully. Your toes and ball of the foot should not feel jiggly within the shoe, and you should not feel any pain or burning from the onset.

As such, the ability to try on the shoes in a shop is very useful, and save you some grief and risk when you buy online.

In terms of value, there are many many makers in the market. Some are really good value, some are so so, and some are terrible value.

The easiest way to approach and find a rational decision is to work within your budget.

The entry level price point for most GYW shoes is between 300-500. The entry level price point for handwelted shoes is around 700-800 odd.

At the lower price points, there are fairly minimal differences between materials, construction, finishing, so my advice at this price, is to really look for something that fits you well. Because you're not going to wear something that makes you feel uncomfortable. A good understanding from the outset of what fits you best, will aid you in decision making if and when you choose to buy from more expensive makers in future. Be prepared though, to face imperfections in shoes at this price point. Leather inconsistency, a slightly crooked captoe, a wonky medallion, slightly messy brogueing, so-so or sometimes imperfect finishing. All these will be encountered from time to time, depending on luck.

After experimenting from and trying numerous makers, the best value makers at the mid range and slightly higher price points are IMO (but not all), the Italians, Japanese, and the Austro-Hungarians. Specifically, Bonafe, AM, Vass (plus most of the other AH makers), and Jan Kielman if you have the budget for them. You'll still find some imperfections at this level, and the finishing may not be perfect. But if have chosen to buy a pair of handwelted shoes at this price, one needs to be aware of the additional cost in terms of materials, time, labour, and expertise needed for this process.

Be very very careful when paying more than 1k for a pair of shoes, as anything GYW and above this price is not justifiable. You need to be very discerning at this point. And know exactly what goes into the pair of shoes. It's probably a discussion for another day. But avoid paying for media hype, swanky marketing campaigns, and brand names, instead of actual shoe quality.

Enjoy shopping my friend.

Many thanks for this very detailed advice, Thunder March. Grateful if you could recommend a few shops in Singapore where I can have a look (other than the shops which others have recommended above). Thank you.

Besides what was mentioned, you can also consider Loake at Robinsons, or Carmina at Capitol (though they're a little pricey these days I think?).

If you are a size UK 8.5, you are also welcome to try on any of my shoes to figure out your fit, with socks. I have a good selection at home. More designs, lasts and makers than most shops.
