so I received my Meermin Oxford, everything looks alright, except that there is a small "tear" on the side of the leather. they offered to let me return the shoes, or waiving off the shipping for the next order.

well I think I will be keeping it to save the trouble, so just to share for those ppl who are OCD about this. Cheers!

If you are not ordering from them again or even if you are but not sure when, it is better to ask them to waive off the shipping charge and refund you for the current shipping instead.

Better to enjoy the discount now rather than some time in the future, which is not certain and circumstances may change.

Thanks for the advice!

Alot of retailers like to offer this kind of compensation as it works better for them than you. It ensures continued patronage but for the customer they are on the losing end. Sometimes it is hard to claim this kind of partial waiver in future, e.g. Business change hands, staff turnover, you prefer another shoe brand etc.

Think about the return voucher shops give, not many people actually use it, if the product/ food is not good enough, people dun come back.

Regarding the Brannock device, the red wing people seems to be the ones that measure them well enough.

I've seen it at New Balance, running lab and RSH too as others mentioned but do note that the Brannock is (highly suspect) not standard and some staff are not trained to measure it properly, I've had SAs tell me to stand one foot forward, some ask me to sit (nice of them but measurement will get screwed.)

When I mention non standard, I suspect highly that they use different scale of measurement. I am right on 11D but some put me 11E, others in sports outlet put me closer to 12. Obviously time of the day and amount of exercise you had that day makes a difference. They can only provide a starting point as a guide but not to be trusted as a definite number for ordering online. Even if you paid a professional to do it, it is not a be all end all number.

Alot of European houses dun put much trust on the brannock, and they operate a different sizing scheme. The Japanese ones just straightaway tell me no size but my friend size 8 they use a measuring tape at Isetan. Most of the best shoemakers don't put people on Brannock devices and that seems to tell me how much faith they have in them.

Context is important. A quality shoe for me will have goodyear welting and top or full-grain leathers. Knowing what you're paying for is very important.

I hope when you say 'branded', you are referring to the Pradas, LVs, etc. Leather is the highest cost contributor in almost all brands of shoes. Different shoes, for example Edward Green and Carmin, buy their leather from different tanneries. Even if they buy 1st tier leather, it doesn't mean the quality is the same. Different parts of the 1st tier leather cost differently too. Most leathers of good shoes makers like Edward Green or G&G come from the back or spine area. And the other cheaper shoes such as C&J come from a mixture of spine, belly and other portions of the hide.

As compared to your earlier post of the Pedros and Aldos of tbe world then I believe my point stands.

I'm a little unsure of what your point is though, in relation to the OPs original question. Perhaps you can offer him your opinion?

How do you define 'quality' product? Someone who buys Pedro, Aldo or Bata shoes find Meermin and Carmina are big brand names, and he will be paying for the branding too.

Ask around. If its a name commonly recalled by the average person on the street, chances are its a Big Brand with an equally big marketing budget lol

Yet to see any GCP who knew about Carmina

Interesting tidbit, SF folks consider Meermin's QC as been worse than Nike lol

Yes quality of uppers, finishing, spi blah blah etc differentiate and offer a variance to distinguish different level of makers.

But that's really beside the point really since the original intent(imo) of the question lay in establishing base construction techniques. Thus, GYW is at a minimum, a superior technique of construction compared to the cemented construction of most mass market or even entry level Lux brand footwear that people are still paying loads for.

That includes entry level Prada, lv, tods, ferragamo studio, Gucci

QFT.

For a moment there, I thought I was going a little mad.
