Yeah I was pretty impressed, having patronised both edetal and llyr. Least punishing break in period by far.

Sorry I never got back to you on offloading em, but you should definitely get a pair yourself! :D

1880 calf leather are soft and easy to break in. My first pair of GYW shoes was an 1880 in Mayfair last which I loved. Unfortunately Loake discontinued that last. Thus I spent $180 to have it resoled at eea, though I can buy a new pair with just a bit more.

These are half a size too large so I don't know if that makes a difference. You're probably right though since the capital last is known to be roomier width wise

$300 meermin vs $500 carmina shoes

Does the latter represent greater value for money?

I just received my first meermin balmoral in elton last. Thou Is stated as regular fit and hence i bought my usual UK size, but when worn is very very snug. I wonder will the shoe be just nice after breaking in?
Or perhaps i should get half a nice bigger next time?

There's always a risk with buying without trying on the size. At least now you have the a rough feel of how the shoe will fit to decide what size should fit you.

Snug shoes can get more comfortable as they are broken in, and in the worst case scenario can be stretched.

The remedy for shoes that are too big are a different matter however.

Long answer short, Yup :s13:

Of course if your budget only affords you a pair of GYW shoes then it's fine to go with Meermins but if you're looking to expand beyond one pair of shoes [which is highly recommended, 5 is a good number to start with :s13:] then you'll start questioning why you didn't save up and spend the extra for the Carminas.

It's a slippery slope though as you'll start lusting for Vass, EB, EGs, StC and finally bespoke, when you realize you have lots of awesome shoes but the bank account is empty  well, for us mere mortals at least... Lots of elites in this thread wouldn't have this issue though :D

Yes

Advice is always buy what you are able and what you like, ideally the latter if you are super elite, but if you can, just go for Carmina. They are very entry level as compared to crispins or greens, then the comparison would come again, xxx vs xxx.

What SquallLH said is very true.

It just goes on and on, if you can afford Carminas, why not save up for a month or two to get a vass? If you can afford a vass, why not save up for a john lobb? If you can get a john lobb, why not save up for crispins or berluti?

Well technically that would be the end, one berluti and i'm done.

I have a slightly different take on this. Sure, we can all buy all the grail shoes, but it is also interesting to buy some from the lower priced makers like Meermin; granted the QC and workmanship is not as good (sometimes even EG also fail).

Take for example, i have a Meermin suede and calf leather balmoral boot from a GMTO run. Would i love a EG Galway? Sure. But how often will i use it? However, with a Meermin balmoral boot, i get to have a pair of unique makeup which i wear occasionally and still get to enjoy at a reasonable price point.

My 2 cents.

I tend to agree with urban.

One of my favorite pairs of shoes is a pair of EEA cap toe derby boots I bought for $150 and sent for a patina job.

They are not as well made in every area than say my Ed Greens, but by no means are they shoddy either. They sure feel and look like a million bucks though.

I think there is great value to be had at lower price points as long as the basic criteria for quality is met.

Thanks. Think will wear to break in and stretch the shoe a bit as well. Hopefully it gets comfortable before i lose my patience wearing it.
