hi guys I have had this pair of shoes that I bought in Europe >10 yrs ago, seldom wear and never taken care of. From the photos below can you tell if it is stitched or cemented construction? I am just wondering if I should bother to start caring for it

Thanks Thundermarch for the detailed explanation. Always enjoy your comments.

Actually, when I said inferior, the info was mostly from google search. There are not a lot of info on pigskin used in dress shoes so I thought you could provide some insights and you did. :D

Hey, no problem. Glad to be of help.

For the price you're paying for a Carmina locally, there's plenty of other alternatives.

Unless there's a pair that you particularly like that is not available from other makers.....

You are right, there is a model that is not available from other makers.

What other alternatives would you recommend at the price range?

Without knowing what style/model you were eyeing, off the top of my head I can name a few:

Carlos Santos
Yanko
Enzo Bonafe
TLB
Oriental
Corno Blu

Based on Skoaktie's size comparison, you'll most likely be taking UK8 in Carlos Santos shoes.

You can try out Carlos Santos shoes at The Quarters locally. Think they've a popup at AssembleSG if I'm not wrong.

It's Blake-stitched construction. From the mould and condition of the shoes, might be tough to remove them. Nonetheless, if use proper shoe care products, should at least be able to recondition and shine this pair.

Depends on whether you'd prefer getting a brand new pair instead, since this pair is already more than 10 years old.

How do you guys tell the blake-stitch apart from goodyear welted from the photo?
Thanks.

Not sure if others see it this way, but what I look at:

The gap between stitching and edges of the shoe look like it is on inside of the shoe.

On Goodyear welt the stitching is closer to the edges since it is on the outside of the shoe.

Chose pictures with stronger contrast in the stitching for illustration.

However what appears to be Goodyear welt could sometimes be blake-rapid or even fake stitching.

FWIW pigskin is easily found in Japan, i suppose as a byproduct of all the pork they consume. Cheap too compared to other leathers here.

However, all the pigskins I have seen here are for lining or side lining. Thin and extremely soft. More suitable for ladies shoes than men IMO.

Haven't got a chance to work with something suitable for uppers but damn those pigskin AM look amazing!!

Thanks for the insightful info. I will just continue to occasionally moisturise the leather with saphir renovator. And yeah I am in the market to get a quality pair too
