If first time polishing you will need more base layers of wax before you can
start spit polishing. I start with 6 layers for new shoes.

You need time for the layers of wax to dry before you start to apply another layer. Or else subsequently layers will remove the previous layers.

You were rubbing a wet cloth onto the wax layers and rubbing them off instead of adding on layers of wax with the aid of water to help smooth the wax layers.

Ah... I see.... I had a feeling that was the case after another round of testing last night.

So how long should I wait for the wax to dry? And how thick should the layers be?

Thanks!

If you use water sparingly. I use a spray bottle, instead of dipping the cloth wet, should be very fast. Or you can put a bit of alchohol in the water to make it dry faster.

I will apply as many layers as it takes to achieve a nice shine.

Bullocks, leather is stiff right out of the box. I'm referring to the uppers. They have to be seasoned by wearing them. Any bespoke shoemaker will tell you the same thing.

Soft and hard is subjective lah. Most of the cheap smooth grain leather feels like cardboard while full grain leather feels softer to me.

There are exceptions, my friend bought a pair of shoes from tods and the leather felt soft and comfortable although is some smooth grain leather.

Tell me if i'm right on the procedure here:

1) apply few layers of wax. Allow each layer to dry before applying next layer.
2) after applying a few layers, do spit polishing.
3) repeat 1 & 2 until shine achieved?

Also, when using water, do I still have to have wax on the cloth?

You had the same problem has I had when I started out previously. Your problem is too much water.

To solve your problem, apply the correct saphir cream colour over the spot, and let it absorb and dry a few minutes. Apply for a few times then brush it off.

Apply a few layers of wax as a base. Only dab, a little bit of water, and wax to polish. Renovateur not advisable for new pair of shoes. Give your shoes a few wears and flex them all over.

After that few wears, then apply your wax and renovateur.

If this is a water problem, I just like to add that I never use water. Instead, I use my breath on the shoes. Something like spit in spit shine, except I don't spit, just breathe heavily onto the shoes though my mouth. :s13:

once you start spit polish, dont go back to step 1 will undo the shine

When use water have to use polish also. Or else u are rubbing away the shine.

I do that as a finishing touch

How come reno not suitable? For me I always use on new leather products, then subsequent use cream.

So how do I achieve that mirror-like finish? if reapplying wax will undo the shine, then how would I know when to stop applying way and move on to spit polish?

Also, some leather have bigger, more obvious pores. How do I account for that when polishing?

Sorry for the many questions.... :s22:

each time u apply the layer of wax also must brush off. after a few layers the semi shine looks ok then start to spit polish

spit polish then will start to have a mirror shine.

the wax will cover the pores no need to worry. even toecap got medallion also can polish so no worries

oh... so I'm supposed to:

1) Apply 1 layer of wax, wait to dry
2) brush off wax, apply another layer, wait to dry
3) repeat 1-2 until semi shine is acceptable
4) spit polish.

is the above correct?

I've always had the impression that it was to apply layers and layers of wax before brushing it off...

Apply thin layer of wax, brush off, since there is no water no need to wait for dry. Repeat till you happy with the "semi-shine" as a foundation for the mirror shine. Wait to dry is for in between layers of spit polish which is a bit of water with a bit of polish, the key is to use very little water and very little polish at a time.

Anyone here owned Archules's shoes? How is the quality and comfort? Thinking to hoot.. or should I just go for the Jshoes Charlie Core at $215 (birthday month can get 20% off at tangs). Looking for shoes that are casual and yet formal enough for dinner events/presentations..

Your discussion really interest me. Perhaps we could meet up and shine shoes, we could learn a thing or two!

How do you consider the thickness to be 1 layer?

Usually I just apply once in circular motion, wait for dry then dab cloth in water and start polishing.
