The cobbler in Far East Plaza recommended me a leather cleaning shop in the same building, forgot the name.
I wanted to dye my red wing when it has become too moldy. I was quoted $200. Too ex. Now you know why i have forgotten the shop name

Anyone has 1st hand experience dying your own leather shoes?

Just wondering if it is possible to achieve similar finishing as a new pair of shoes purchased?

My understanding is, it is very difficult and requires a lot of experience.
Even the dyes are not available locally

Tried that. Used lexol leather cleaner to stripe off everything, still dark as shown in pic.

Am wondering anyone know if which cobbler here provide dyeing leather services or any shop selling leather dye that i can DIY

Meermin say they can ship back for me but can't assure can be fixed.

Lexol is too mild, you should try Renomat or rubbing alcohol and see if you could stripe the rest of the "dye" off if you're experimenting...

Also, is Meermin paying for the return shipping both ways?
Was considering a pair of half brogue oxfords with them but having seconds thoughts now...

Only one way from Spain to Singapore...I have to pay Sg to Spain myself. Anyway I went to the shop at Far East plaza and repair liao. 2nd floor shop called le shine. They said can dye back but the calf grain might be covered. The lady also mention so peculiar of new shoe to be like that....

Anyway this is the risk of ordering online but if u ask me I will order from them again. I have better experience of ordering and receiving as well as 3 other pairs of my classic line. In fact I am intending to go for their linea maestro soon...

What's the damage? They will just patch up that spot for that particular shoe or re-dye both shoes?

I am glad that you managed to fix the discolorization.

But I am curious as to whether they suggested offering a replacement in the case where they can't fix the shoe for you.

I see... same problem with ordering outside the origin country of any retail companies. How much was the damage for dyeing it black? I'm curious on her comments that dyeing will cover the scotch grain since the prints are embossed into the leather...

I feel it's not really an online order issue which normally pertains to problems like sending the wrong model, sizes not fitting correct & etc. More like QC problem since you could still get this problem purchasing it in store and only discovered it after you started polishing on it at home...

I'm still bothered if darker base leather was used... Nonetheless, glad it's concluded for you, let us know when you get the Linea Maestro line

Agree it is more on the QC issue coming from Meermin. Then again, based on styleforum thread, it is quite a norm for classic line to occur with QC issue. Guess i am just the unlucky one so far... But hey even Linea Maestro is not entirely free from QC issue.

Got it done for $35. Will share pic after repair done

So far my communication with Meermin is that it is not counted as factory defact but i keep insisting it is but to no avail cause the condition of leather looks ok until i started to polish. As for the repair from Meermin, I need to pay for sg-spain(Never get a quote for shipping), they pay spain-sg (20euros). But not guarantee can be fixed.

Then I ordered a briefcase and a belt from them in a subsequent order. They sent me a cheaper model of the briefcase and I alerted them to it. They offered to (1) either have me send the bag back and they will ship a new one to me all at their cost or (2) give me a refund of the costs of two-way shipping and the price differential and i keep the 'wrong' bag.

They have bad QC in terms of not checking before shipping. But they have excellent customer service. Because I told them i want to opt for Option 1 and then 2 days later tell them i will take Option 2. No questions asked. Money was credited to my credit card the next day.

Couldn't agree more with the customer services coming from UK online retailer. My experience is not on shoe(not yet) but with belt. I guess because of language, communication is more of a breeze and hence the better experience.

Spain online retailer is more of a hit and miss affair in term of customer services... Carmina/Meermin....

My research on Herring 1966 vs Premier...

Herring 1966:
MTO versions of Alfred Sargent Exclusives. U pay a premium of 25GBP to get unique colors and design. If u don't care for all that, it's cheaper to get from afinepairofshoes (AFPOS). Free shipping, free AS lasted shoe trees, which is a very good deal.

Herring Premier:
Mostly MTO versions of Cheaney. Unlike AS Exclusives, they don't come with fiddleback waists or oak bark tanned soles. Again, if u don't care for Herring-exclusive colors and designs, it will be cheaper to get from Cheaney website. I personally prefer having the beautiful Cheaney logo on the sole.
There are a few models made by AS. At 275GPB these are pretty good value, if u don't want to pay a premium for fiddleback waists and oak bark tanned soles. (Normal AS Exclusives are 400GBP). Think of these as "value" versions of AS Exclusives.

For both 1966 and Premier lines, they use Herring-exclusive lasts.
