Bare essentials you probably need 2 brushes and some rags, assuming you only have black and dark brown shoes

Well you'll need a brush regardless, even the army issues polishing brushes for combat boots lol.

Its needed at the end to help the leather accept the polish evenly into the pores when the upper is heated up by brushing.

Horsehair is just a more premium material (or goat hair even). Reason is not to risk synthetic bristles scratching the more delicate calf leathers or the mirror polish when all you want to do is brush off dust.
