I think if wanna use for another 2 years, 2GB 16GB storage definitely not a safe option. Some more is 5" screen. Today the de facto standard is 5.5 inch display.

From a layman like me looking at the phone, I didn't see any part that I can remove the cover with.... maybe those handphone repair shop can help u.

But if u dun mind, u can always sandpaper the camera lens and that should be sufficient to satisfy the red zone requirement rite?

oh! I did not know the back cover is non-removable... handphone shop told me camera is able to remove but I think they were thinking of a diff model. Do you have any alternatives for a decent phone that can remove camera? cheers

Do u intend to put back the camera after your NS stint? If u are gonna buy another phone after that, then I suppose the sandpaper method is feasible? :o

the phone is purely for my NS stint but i'd preferably like to keep the camera intact so I can use after NS

Not everyone prefer such a large screen, and the memory combination is more of a personal preference to each individual.

2GB RAM is not practical for Mi UI. Even Asus Zenfone 2 Laser has been upgraded with 3GB RAM 32GB ROM.
16GB ROM is not practical for Android 6.0 Marsh mallow as apps can no longer be stored on the external microSD card. In addition, Xiaomi has another two limitations : you cannot store data on microSD card if you're using dual SIM due to the hybrid SIM slot design & their operating system size is unusually huge, taking up a tremendous proportion of the 16GB ROM.

Don't forget the front facing camera as well, which means you'll be "scratching" your screen just to blur out the lens. So it's better to get it removed by the handphone shop you mentioned.
