April has been horrible, all the gains of March given back.

YTD investment growth: -3.03%
YTD networth growth: -1.98%
YTD inflow: 1.04%
Equity ratio: 63%

Some of my funds have 1 day delay in reporting, so this is without taking into account the 4% crash in Nasdaq during late US hours.

May numbers:

YTD investment growth: -5.83%
YTD networth growth: -3.10%
YTD inflow: 2.72%
Equity ratio: 74.2%

Well the good news is that if you use VT as the benchmark, you are still outperforming the benchmark. My return has also turned negative...

Thanks for updating this thread... I forgot which thread I was supposed to update my May returns - my portfolio gained 0.86% (loss of 1.79 narrowed to 0.93).

I suppose the good news is that STI stocks has gained 3.5% YTD so it offsets the loss in my IBKR portfolio which is US/UK stocks only.

Anyway, hoping for a summer rally!

My YTD portfolio is -10%, year on year is +47%. Looking forward for the market to recover and normalise by end of the year.

That is awesome. I am curious, how did you manage to make 47% year on year, because the high growth ARKK type stocks already peaked in Feb 2021. From May 2021, what has gone up 47% and yet went down 10% this year?

Because I don't just hold equities and wait for it to go up, I buy and sell along the way. My biggest holding is AMD and its up 25+% over last year.

I have some times to track my net worth from 1994 to 2022

The first 10 years (1994 to 2004 based on estimation) was trading of stocks with no strategy (more like punting), second 10 years (2004 to 2014) of doing nothing with my investment except putting in FD and banks, and the last 8 years (2014 to 2022) investing in dividend stocks and interest bearing bonds.
Almost 2 lost decades of investment mistep have cost me dearly..

Thank you for sharing this in your blog. Great read and I am also a believer in long term (+ 10 years) compounding effect of a dividend portfolio.

Did you get married and have kids? All these add on to your spending so even you earned more you spend more isn't it? Then later you got elderly parents that need you another spending. So as you earned more you spend more so total is still more or less or break even? What about your own health all ok no need spending?

But thanks for your sharing.

i don't have data that far back, but my Liquid NW graph would be slightly different.

From 2008-2010 there would be a sharp rise because of gains from GFC.

Then I bought a condo which resulted in LNW flatlining for 7 years till 2016 when I fully repaid the housing loan. Then in 2016, I restarted investing again /building up warchest/savings so LNW would start climbing again.

Websites like srx and 99co claim that my property got 7 figure capital gain (whether reliable or not I dunno) ... but residence is not part of LNW 😅

Congratulations! Very impressive.

I’m also amazed by your record keeping. Btw, how much would be the yearly earnings yield (I.e. total dividend+Bond interest divided by the LNW on 30th Jun of each year). My guess is if you do this and then compare to the 10Y yields in Singapore during the first 2 decades, you would see almost similar nos. That’s because interest rates were much higher in the 1990s and started trending meaningfully lower only in the early 2000s and this was a global phenomenon. You probably did the right thing even in those 2 decades.

Yes , very long but still way below for most people who typically work 40+ years (25 to 65). I was planning to stop at 25 but covid extend another a few more year. Now with layoff looming, I am holding out for a package.. Hopefully, i get it this year or probably will quit on my own by next year.

I did get married but no kid.. My mom has enough saving to last a long while as i also make sure she receives enough interest from SSB and CPF . She is also staying in my house for free and not much to spend. Family doesn't impact my net worth very much except my wife is sick all the times but under control.

Unfortunately, My biggest miss was from 2009 to 2016 bull run as i was scared to invest. :( . Otherwise my liquid net worth growth will be in a different trajectory. My properties purchase was the biggest gain as both of them went up more than 100%.. However, for simplicity I did not add them in my calculation as valuation tracking for a long period is difficult to obtain. If I sell one of them after I retire, i will treat it like a nice bonus. :)

During the 90s and early 00s, bank interest was still good but still barely beat inflation. However, I was a noob in investing and lost more than 100K in penny stocks and S-Chip during my first decade .Interest went downhill after GFC, that why my networth growth is purely from salary saving. Yeah, the first 2 decades was probably ok if I have not lost and then completely miss the boat from GFC

28 sounds like a good number to me as well.

All the best for a package!
