You can also fly to Nanning or Guiyang and take a HSR from there to Kunming. You will have to check the schedules and airfare though.

I don't like red eye flight too. For me I book Thai airline and have a layover at Bangkok for 1 to 2 hrs.

What telco are you using? Most plans now have data roaming entitlements. I just came back from China and i use the data provided monthly.

are there direct flights from singapore to kunming in December? Cannot find any, not even scoot or china eastern. Only managed to find Thai Airways or Air Asia
