19 this year.

Liquid cash - $6.9k

Stocks and Bonds - $9k

Net worth as of now is about $16.9k

Aim to reach $25k before enlistment.

I have a daring goal to reach $40k after ORD.

Very good! I have about the same amount before enlistment... bulk of the money is from lifelong savings of pocket money and salary from my part time work. But you have a much better head start than me. Back then, I know nuts about investment and all my money is in FD or savings account. I still remember last time FD can get 4% interest during my schooling days. :s22:

This is a very down-to-earth advice! Just to share... for my 1st job (2007) after getting my degree, my starting pay was only 2.8k. This year, I'm likely to break the 10k barrier finally! :s12: Don't belittle the power of human capital. We are essentially exchanging our precious time & energy for money. Give your best shot, upgrade and upsell yourself!

Just a side note: It is precisely because of this potential of human capital that I can't get myself to agree with what Master Leong was doing.... resigning at such an early age and do full time trading with such a limited networth.

Thank you! My dividend yield for my portfolio is about 5% haha!

Saving aggressively and not doing anymore investments yet.

everyone has their own idea of what constitutes the "best" life to themselves

some likes to stay in condo, some don't, some likes to drive cars, some don't, some likes to go overseas holidays multiple times a year while some don't ...

as a saying goes, you only need that much money in life. the rest is just for showing off.

Indeed, many people focus a lot on investing in financial assets, but not enough on themselves, which can make a much more significant difference in networth. I guess it's because they don't see the benefits of investing in themselves immediately.

Some r worse than that... ST reported a lot of fresh grad or young ppl took up PHV driving as a job... lured by the high pay and ability to own a car. However the longer they stay in this line, the harder it is going to be for them to switch out. Not saying PHV or taxi driving is a bad job, some taxi driver managed to raise a family with that... but taxi driving is one job where ppl usually go into when they get retrenched or as can't find any better job. Being a driver means ur really trading your hours for money. Once u stop driving (be it sick or for personal reasons eg holidays), there goes ur income. And your income won't grow substantially.

Ya, but for the majority of us, money is never enough because of lifestyle inflation. Once we r earning much more, we tend to spend more or pick up finer things in life.

you dont know their struggles so don't judge them thinking you know all about their situation

not all young ppl drive PHV because of the high pay or ability to own a car. some might have struggles on their own in finding a job. its the same like saying bus drivers in their 30s are dumb or aunties in their 40s taking up cleaner jobs are dumb or housewives who quit their decent paying jobs to become a full time housewives are dumb too

Fine... I used the wrong word... "a lot" isn't what ST/CNA used. But u don't blame me for having this impression, u should blame our press for casting them in a bad light. =:p btw I also did mention phv n taxi driver is a job which many takes up due to retrenchment or if they can't find any better jobs.

PS: I'm using e lousy app which has no option for inserting Web link and off hand I can't rmb which tag to use. =/

Our education plays an important role as well. My parents have been telling me since young to study hard, chase paper, get a good job etc. In a way they r right... cos hiring managers make their hiring decisions based on meritocracy (or connections)... they don't hire someone just bcos they r in hardship or they sympathise the job applicant. End of the day, they have an obligation to the company/organisation to hire good and suitable employees (based on cv and interview). There aren't too many not-for-profit or charitable organisations/companies around u know.
