KDL-55W800C. Didn't do firmware update before. However, when problem started I tried to reflash using USB but it didn't work coz tv keeps rebooting. Guess tv is a goner now.

What is the TV model? This is a common problem for most Sony android models.
If you have done a firmware update recently, rebooting is a common error. Sony does not seem to honor any repairs due to software glitches like this. Need to reflash the original firmware or to factory settings.

There are 2 ways to reflash. One by USB and one by an external programmer. For that, you need specific equipment. The difficulty is in getting the firmware for your specific TV.

if repair the existing TV screen backlight (other thn the white light on the screen, the tv is still working fine)

vs

buy new tv set

whh is the better option cost wise?

Mine is $300+ for backlight.. if panel spoiled while changing = gone case waste money.. LG tech don't even keen to try after knowing my tv is so cheap.. how much u paid for the tv last time??

LG backlight is easy to get. Try searching in Aliexpress or Taobao.

reliable or easy to self instal?

to be honest i wont want to self repair with 1/2-baked skills later end up damage the tv further

or shd i just hold back and wait to buy a new one?

Check out youtube videos on the repair and decide if you want to give it a go. If the parts is cheap I'd say why dont give it a try.
Or contact a poster here and ask for quotation?

2017.. mine is 55 inch LG tv.. don't bother calling LG tech.. waste time.. i let limtk55 try repairing.. if can fix will put in mbr.. but now tv quite cheap imo.. less than $1k will get a cheap 4k tv..

i ask LG main service ctr...quoted $170.25 (if i hear correctly) just for technician come down to troubleshoot (havnt count in the cost of the spare part)

some of the other tv repair numbers tht i whatsapp earlier quote me around $200-$250 to repair

Many steps, so is best to be careful. If TV still useable, and you have no confident. Dont try. If already cannot watch, give it a try as you wilk feel much rewards if successfully fixed by diy.

Too bad, yours is 55in. I have LED back light taken out from my friend 42in LG TV. He got a crack screen, also cannot claim warranty.

Old TV worth nothing. Unless you have money to kill, wait till old TV go bad. By that time you may be able to get newer model or old model at cheaper price.

it happened after water spilt on it.

Still under warranty, but I think LG doesn't cover it.

For OLED panel, no sub components is repairable from field. So if you TV no longer under warranty, it is basically scrap value.

Hopefully the water only affected or burn some pins on connector.
