Knowing how LTA works, they are probably still using the big black one on the left...

For something to overheat, means the current draw must be substantial.

LTA please clarify how much is the power draw when the car is parked, how long can we leave our cars parked before the car battery becomes too weak to start the engine :s11:

Can LTA please quash the rumours that the OBU would suffer permanent damage if internal battery of OBU becomes flat :s11:
I heard someone said that the OBU is on 24/7 and we cannot off it else we would render it inoperable

We then need to go down to LTA to pay a fee to reactivate it

If that's the case, means our car batteries will confirm uplorry very fast, especially if we don't drive for a week or more when we go for a long holiday

A very good point. What is the OBU power consumption during rest? Does it ever switch off? What sort of data does it give away when SPF drive around at night in mscp and scan the devices?
Or worse, what if someone managed to hack the system and come up with a similar scanner?

Until now, they never address the data security and privacy issue!

Indeed very worrying. From LTA's laymen understanding of their own device, seems it will under high load constantly, computing something. The communication with the GPS satellite. I don't see how it is computationally intensive. Could be poorly written in-house code.
Paid for the cheapest contractor - what sort of "quality" can we expect?

But how they gonna detect cars which go offline ah. Since their lame device doesn't connect to internet? How to provide road updates? Means their device also connect to internet? Needs sim card??? Inside tunnel how??
I suspect besides mobile speed cam teams, they will also have mobile ERP scanning teams to go around checking if our OBU is online or not

i don't think it is wrong to have a toggle switch to off it :s13:

when needed then on again.

the existing type IU is wired into the car such that it is always powered. that's why you can slot in a cashcard and see the balance without switching on the ignition

i suppose the new generation IU would also be the same. what's unclear is how much standby power consumption it draws and whether it has a automatic low battery power off mode like dashcams

They overspec for Xeon chips is it ??
How come need so much power ?
I can pass them my 4yr old $100 amazfit watch with gps to reverse engineer if they want.

Nowadays pple put dash cams that consume battery. Now still need to include the 3pc meal, will it consume too much energy to the point where you can't start the car?

Only parked cars can experience greenhouse effect. Standby power during parked must be high and generating heat; until they have to shade the OBU.

they just scan for the IU number and tally against the backend records... not rocket science.

If I’m not wrong, the old iu, the carpark guys can come and scans to check season parking.

Won’t be surprised if one day someone say an authorised agency can go and scan for datapoints

i dont think its standby power used, but the ambient temperature that is the problem. which means they never spec the chips properly because want cheap pay peanuts and get monkey poop lol

If my cat comes with li-ion battery and each replacement cost 10k, will LTA pay for me if my battery fail after installing OBU?

You are right. I think the LTA scholars really too layman liao. As far as I know, gahmen engineers are never really doing the actual heavy work but is consultants and vendors doing the real engineering work. They just check and set their requirements. In this case, they failed miserably.

I doubt they trialed run the OBU in hot sun for one year.
