I dont have a sfp+ router yet, planning to upgrade in future,

From the report here, you cannot get both, you can only get one of the two, either the bridged ONR from FibreHome, or the Huawei XGS-PON ONU stick.

could be the case. not sure if any other users have also done this change.
the old modem was swapped around 2022. and i understand there is no reason for them to swap out modem if they are still working

Is it wise to recontract to 3Gb plan? I mostly use for working cause I WFH based and media streaming from box.

What router recommend if I recontract from Viewqwest 1Gb to 3Gb plan and maximize the speed improvement? My current Asus AC68U don't have 2.5Ghz WAN port.

yes because overall its cheaper
1gbps plan ard 40$
where as u recontract avg out is abt $30+

even if u keep your existing infra, which cap at 1gbps u still have some saving

i not vq promoter :D

Yeah lol, I done some calculation and found that recontract is overall cheaper, after some calculation the monthly cost around $32 per month with 3Gbps. If changing the router can achieve higher speed, I don't mind to change the router as more IoT devices connected to the router, I feel like a bit congested sometime, not sure it's due to ISP or router issues.

Depends on your budget, if u need mesh or not.
Like if you want to stick with Asus or move to other brand.
I migrate to deco BE65 (4x2.5G) from my asus cos price more affordable based on similar hardware specs.
But Asus more feature rich + merlin firmware support included security protection, DOT/DOH & etc.
Deco security protection need subscription.

You can consider to upgrade to 2.5Gbps capable routers like the excellent Asus GT-AX6000 with dual 2.5G ports. It is about S$360 BNIB from Carousell. Or you can consider other options like Asus TUF-AX6000 (China version is called TX-AX6000 and below S$200 but no local warranty).

There are many options depending on your budget.

Your RT-AC68U has been EOLed by Asus so you'd better upgrade your router anyway.

You get static IP? I am considering whether want to take that or not. I got Synology NAS, connecting with Quickconnect. And it was working fine now, with Quickconnect, I don't think will require Static IP however, owning static IP is great too. Just not sure whether need to spend extra money for that or not.

I dont need mesh, my house is too small for that, HDB 3R, so I think one router with better coverage is fine. Last room got no people staying for now.

I noticed many good advertisements for a brand called Ruijie (reyee) on TikTok, but I've never used their products before. I'm concerned about the stability, although the performance looks impressive. I'm just not sure if the positive reviews are due to paid marketing...

How does the Xiaomi AC9000 compare to the two models you mentioned? Which one is better? My current Asus router has Merlin firmware, but I'm looking for features like parental controls with scheduling, which Asus seems to lack. I'd also like URL filtering similar to Palo Alto's firewall, so I can block my kids from watching YouTube until they've finished their homework and only allow them to watch between 9-10 PM.

I have the Private IP.
Early batch where they provide the IP so just carry on.
Think got 1 post from xiaofan with the static IP more stable cos move to CGNAT.
I don't really have issue with VQ except when their network is down so just carry on.

Xiaomi AX9000 will be much worse in terms of FW features compared to Asus. The OpenWRT support of Xiaomi AX9000 may not be the best.

GT-AX6000 has Merlin support.

You can install OpenWRT on TUF-AX6000 which should provide better firewall and parent control function.

Another option is GL.iNET MT-6000 with OpenWRT support.

If you are interested in more advanced firewall function, get a mini PC with Intel N100 CPU and quad 2.5G ports, then install pfSense with pfBlockerNG-devel.

Performance Wise will Xiaomi AX9000 better than the 2 Asus that you introduced earlier?

Good ideas for the pfSense, perhaps I should get a PCIE that have quad 2.5G port and install on my NAS then use NAS to spin up a pfSense VM or make use of PVE to host Synology NAS + pfSense. My NAS is custom-built type.

Wireless performance should be similar.

I tend to think GT-AX6000 will have the best wireleas among the three.

Xiaomi AX9000 triband is more suitable for wireless backhaul, the report says the wireless coverage is worse than the dual band Xiaomi AX6000.

come to think about it, for me and those who signed up the 3gbps plan (not sure those on higher speed)
we were given this new modem which can support only 2.5gbps, what happen to the other 0.5gbps?

The bridged ONR supports up to 10Gbps. Same for the XGS-PON ONU stick. You can get a 10G capable router to fully utilize the 3Gbps bandwidth.

the ONT supports 10GbE. i tested it on 1G, 2.5G ethernet all autoneg at the correct speed.
10G ethernet to copper also works as expected. multiple makes and chipset 10G copper sfp+ all work fine.

so where is your verifiable claim that the ONT only supports 2.5G and VQ owes you 0.5Gbps?

did you use a device with a max Lan port speed of 2.5G to connect to the new modem to do a speed test, which show you a max speed of 2.5G from speedtest?
