DIY PC Rig Recommendations For 2025

I actually have been seriously considering mini pc. I think it likely will be able to fit what I need to do/use for. but am a sucker for big-arse casing and also easier to self replace parts if needed. hence, still looking outfor more traditional build over mini-pc.

anyway, what's a good brand? mini-pc to look into? since haven't made up my mind, maybe I can go have a look.

From someone who have done the SFF route, I recommend avoiding ITX or minipc type builds.

Because, minipc, if there is a problem, have to replace whole system most likely.

And for ITX, as time goes by this sized mobos become very hard to find or not available at all.

I would go MATX with basic iGPU or something better with the G series, and a nice thin casing like the Tecware Core Mini. Can replace everything, and less heartache.

7600F is no iGPU at all

The G series, like 8600G, have a larger iGPU suitable for gaming.

in short yes...... but i dont recommend gaming on both of them unless u are playing minesweeper or 2d games...

The 8700G is about the same performance as an RX6400

Completely agreed. But the 8700G is not entirely restricted to just 2D games. It can do a bit more.

To clarify, I should be looking at Ryzen 5/7/9 series, and those with -f suffix so that it comes with igpu right?

-f suffix definitely has no igpu, so avoid if not buying dgpu.
for ryzen 5000 series and earlier (am4), only those with -g suffix (eg 5500gt, 5700g) have igpu. these are what i refer to as am4 g series.
for ryzen 7000 series and later (am5), simply avoid those with -f suffix (for now 7400f, 7500f, 8400f, 8700f), everything else have igpu.
which tier and gen of ryzen depends on ur performance target and budget.

For the mobo part, referring to B550 mobo right? from very basic search, 520 and 550 seem to support am4 socket, so why @deepblue_82 mentioned look at 550 based on am4?

b550 boards are generally not bottom of the barrel products like a520 ones, so u usually get a better product overall. then again, am4 g series cannot take advantage of pcie gen4 offered by b550, so in some sense a520 is more well suited.

A cheaper one which isn't too bad would be tecware fusion 2 which is basically a sama im01 pro clone.

the fusion series are not just clones, they are straight rebadges of the sama im series no different from most tecware cases.

as a dedicated gpu and paying dgpu money for it sure, but having that level of performance as integrated isnt too bad and can make for some interesting tiny builds, especially compared to what was previously available.

last time i always used to think i will buy a cpu with a igpu so that i can troubleshoot my my gpu in case something goes wrong.. but each time.. 2 times in a row.. its the mb who failed me... haha

My old Biostar board of 13 years still works daily. One RAM slot not good, but because there are four I still have enough. This is why I still recommend MATX. Got redundancy which still keeps the board useful.

As for the reliability, I don't know if they use better components compared to other brands. When I was buying most people recommended other known brands. It could be also that it is paired with a FSP 400W 80+ Gold, so the power supply does not stress the motherboard too much.

In any case, Biostar is not available locally anymore from what i see.

i was using Biostar mb for a 7 years too on my amd 550 cpu... also mb failed me.. in the end i had to change to a asus one..

Lack of supply probably. The B580 has very low margins as well.

Main thing is what's your use case and budget? Are you only buying from SLS?

Mainly a secondary rig at my partner's house that we can both use to game, 1080p, probably no AAA games.

Budget would be $1k, open to reusing the M.2 SSD, PSU (need to double check wattage) and case. But all new is fine too.


Edit: would be good if can get everything from sls, so can settle it in one day.

am4 has A320, B350, X370, B450, X470, B550, X570, A520 mb support
if u are looking just to use... u can look at A520mb if u have abit more money u can looking at B550...
the cpus with G means it comes with igpu....
i think u saw the 7500F does not come with igpu that is AM5 (A620 , X670E , X670 , B650E , B650 , X870E , X870 , B840 , B850)

wa lau, my bad. I see wrongly, @NightRaven49 actually commented to get -f suffix, but for some reason, I typed out as -g suffix.

So yup, I'll be looking at probably Ryzen 7 G series and B550 mobo. I went to look at the link - https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/desktops/ryzen.html#tabs-0eb49394b2-item-446166865a-tab and I don't see any 7 series has G suffix de, Am I looking at the wrong thing?
