ya loh... those basic surge protector soap bar $50 $70 only.. small investment....

That price good for protecting low value devices/equipment in your house.

For high value devices/equipment like 8K tv, NAS, expensive AV equipment (5 figures or more), expensive PC setup (coming to 5 figures or more) etc get those expensive surge protectors lah

i thgt fuse in the main switch box / BB box and the 13 A plug can protect against surge current ? If got extension mean 2 X 13A Fuse switch ? No ?
Cos last time my house keep black out once lighting detected . only recently. we discover our main switch box is spoil. it been spoil for 10 years omg

My HDB also for many years power trip when got lightning strike but other HDB units no issue. People keep saying its our appliance so we waited for many years and finally changed all the appliances but still trip. End up we try change RCCB (Hager 40A as seen in HDB website) ourselves and problem solved

Now no longer use ELCB. In fact HDB has mandated all to change to RCCB/RCB. Can't remember by when

Most high end electronics have some surge immunity already. Extra surge protection is just “Good to have“…even some cheapo light bulb can survive many years without extra surge protector….some of my old macbook (i bring it everywhere to charge), fridge and TV (used near 10 years) never break down due to surge. :ROFLMAO:

An IEC surge test, primarily defined by the IEC 61000-4-5 standard, evaluates an electronic device's immunity to high-energy voltage spikes (surges) from events like lightning strikes or power system switching, using specific waveforms (e.g., 1.2/50µs voltage, 8/20µs current) and defined voltage levels (Classes 1-4 up to 4kV) to ensure equipment functions reliably or recovers safely after such disturbances.

Gemini suggests using surge protectors with 2,000 joules and above for costly PCs and TVs to lengthen its lifespan. I currently have those.

I get that surge protection is only one variable but does it actually work and to what extent?

Do u use surge protectors?

:s11:
i dont see the link. Surge protectors protect the devices from power spikes when there is short circuit but I dont think it extend the lifespan.

oh ya is RCCB. Changed to the Hager 40A
Most electronics were tested on surge immunity… include the power line…

An IEC surge test on a power line, primarily defined by IEC 61000-4-5, simulates high-energy voltage spikes from lightning or load switching to check if electrical equipment (EUT) can withstand them, using a standard 1.2/50 µs voltage waveform (or 8/20 µs current) coupled onto power/data lines

yes. Even if there are lightning strikes… 1st stage of protection, the electrical circuit will first trip - this is a form a protection in place.

lightning strike time is in microseconds.
the rccb reaction time is more than 10ms. rccb was not designed to protect circuit from lightning strike surge. they are too slow.

so where exactly is the surge coming from?

Lightning? like once in a lifetime pls...
Surge protection is just another gimmick household gadget.

yes - once in a lifetime…rarely happen.

I had seen lightning cases before…. even military grade equipment also got cooked by lightning current...

Maybe gemini lied to me
:(

I think those marketing by the product brands will say it does extend if you are taking into account the fact that your electronics are currently affected by power surges and hence the protection provided by the surge protector 'extends' the electronics' lifespan
