oh no! But how is the driver situation for AMD side? I read the RDNA discussion thread and seems like still quite abit of stability issues
What sorts of stability issues? I have been using the RX 6800 XT for more than a month now, and I certainly don't observe any driver instability.
This are my opinions on both cards,
RX 6800 XT
1. At the resolution that you are gaming, its a superior card over the RTX 3080, IF you don't mind skipping features like ray tracing. You can find a lot of reviews out there to validate my claims,
2. More efficient GPU, drawing less power than RTX 3080,
3. RT performance is lacking when compared to RTX 3080, so you need to consider if this is a feature that you need,
4. Currently no DLSS alternative. Closest you can get is using the Sapphire Trixx Boost that seems to work on any AMD card. Trixx boost works very well for me.
RTX 3080
1. Fares better at 4K as compared to the RX 6800 XT
2. Great RT performance, supplemented by DLSS to claw back performance
3. BUT DLSS is not found in a lot of games, so do not expect DLSS to save the day every time. Moreover, while the adoption rate is growing, but it is still at a not so ideal rate
4. Other useful features like NVENC if you do real time streaming, and even some professional work will find use with the CUDA cores.
5. Ampere as a whole look pretty power inefficient to me because Nvidia pushed the chip too hard to begin with.
Both cards have their pros and cons. At the end of the day, I feel the deciding factor will be whether RT is a big thing for you or not, and if you have use cases that can leverage on the CUDA or Tensor cores. If it is just a pure gaming with no RT and 1440p, I would go for the RX 6800 XT, assuming it is cheaper than the RTX 3080. One other reason why I went for the RX 6800 XT is because I like the fact that there are cases where it can do better than, if not the same as the RTX 3090 (without RT or DLSS of course). It doesn't happen all the time for sure, but I like this sort of surprise.=)
