yes, it's a balance of personal preference and need.

right now, my kids are still pretty young, so they can fit at the back easily. and my parents are pretty old and my dad has a bad back. so a higher SUV definitely helps when he gets in/out of the car.

I own a MPV and 7 seater SUV. my parents has leg issues so dont like SUV being so high. if need to sit behind they like MPV space and easy getting in and out.
my kids young and on car seat so SUV troublesome to move seats to let them go back.

buy stuff MPV more room to fit stuff than SUV.

Usually the back 2 seats are occasional use only.

Can see why people, myself included, value SUV over MPV massively. The ride height and the drive so much better. Also if ever go north in future to campsite or more rural area the ground clearance is a must.

Even smallest one GLB has decent room in back 2 seats as long as you are under 170cm

camping and rural area, MPV depending on brand the base is build close to truck platform. ground clearance is an issue if drive fast, if slow no issue.
higher means rollover chance higher at high speed and curve.

maybe why I own one of each, they each have their own advantage base on need.

I'm looking to get a 7 seater SUV for the family. i soft of shortlisted my choices to the following, budget around 150k to 180k

Kia Sorento
Merc GLB 180
Mazda CX-8
Skoda Kodiaq
Peugeot 5008 (facelift model coming soon)

I'm wondering if there's any models I might have missed?

I'm leaning towards Sorento. But never owned a diesel car before. Not sure what are the potential problems (besides the expensive road tax!)

Your list will be longer and you will be confused eventually cos others will suggest you other models... lolz

I agree to this. If have to frequently pick old people MPV is way way better than SUV

Go for Sorento la.. 7 seater SUV/MPV must go for power to move. Try having 7 passengers and accelerating. The Sorento will outgun all your options with 440nm of torque at less than 2000 rpm while still being fuel efficient. I can't imagine a 7 seater with a 1.3L engine pulling without stress on it.

I always hear people say don't buy peugeot, Renault or Citroën because of gear box issues. but I don't see those complains at places like mycarforum.

Yes go test drive and get the feel. sorento is a toque monster. You like it then put me as referral so i can get rewarded with service credits through their referral program.

I'm driving the older diesel version,so far have not heard of any gear box issue with the new spacetourer version from my group. But the diesel version had some issue with the adblue tank(for diesel emissions)

So far mine still problem free and love the diesel engine, less than $70 for each full tank 55L

Am also thinking about my next upgrade. Currently driving a Avante 2019.

Sorento looks like a monster and I really shudder thinking driving it up those old car parks. The safety features that comes with it looks good too.

The Peugeot 5008 interior is beautiful. Probably also slightly cheaper (car cost and tax) than Sorento.

Looks like the take away from the conversation here is:

• Sorento - got power, shouldnt see much issue with diesel. but might not see savings if dont drive alot.
• Peugeot - its not as bad as people think it is. so far no real complaints from users
• CR-V - good shoutout, was missed from my list. need to go showroom see see look look

And a few other noteworthy MPV mentions. though, I still prefer a higher car and something less "boxy"

Peugeot is way better. If interior and you want your passengers to go wow, this no wrong.

Sorento more for speed. Interior really nothing to shout about.

I test drive them both.
