wah this place become battleground ah for both camps. I will echo what many others said
- 7900xtx if you want cheapest and better performance in non-RT games
- 4080s if you want better performance in RT games
if you want to dabble in a bit of AI/ML work, just enthusiast level ah, then ofcourse go for Nvidia. It's a pain to set up for AMD GPUs. It will work, but you need some workarounds.
Power consumption wise, Nvidia will be slightly more efficient this round as well, check the link below to confirm. ADA is quite energy efficient most of the time.
Then you have to think about upscaling tech, because this is one key battleground the two companies are fighting over. Honestly, Nvidia takes the lead here with DLSS3 as well as frame gen. It is not perfect, but comparing side by side with a 7900xtx, FSR looks more smudged especially when you move about quickly. For reference, i run a 13900k+4090 and my brother runs a 7800x3d+7900xtx. However, i think a lot more games integrate FSR than DLSS. Nvidia supports both, AMD only supports FSR. Because Nvidia are pricks who made it proprietary lol, take it up with them.
Outside of gaming, Nvidia GPU's offers optix and CUDA which can be heavily utilised in editing suites and other programs, so check if your other needs would benefit from this. AMD has openCL but the state of development on that is eh....
Drivers wise, Nvidia usually has a more polished delivery, AMD is slightly buggy at times especially with new games, but this is quite uncommon now. Me and my brother both usually have smooth experience so not much complaints. I have a prejudice against AMD because i used to be a 5700xt owner.
At the end of the day i think your decision depends on:
- What games you play
- Your budget (4080s is about $300 or so more i think)
- Whether you think you would want to use upscaling tech
- Whether you need to use your GPU for anything else than gaming (cuda/optix/ai/ml benefit)
