Hello guys,
I'm currently an NSF and just completed my ACCA F1-F3 so I have the diploma awarded already. I'd like to gather some advice if it would be wise for me to continue the whole ACCA qualification concurrently while I am due to enter NUS BBA next year. Not sure if I'd be able to cope with the workload (I'd probably focus less on ACCA), but would it be advisable to pursue a degree in business admin and go for the ACCA qualification at the same time?

Hi i am in the same situation as you. it all depends on whether you are interested in continuing your accounting specialisation since bba is finance/hr/ops (its not much content overlap). as for me, ill be able to complete up to p2 before nus bba starts next year august and planning to finish 1 module/sem when sch begins. if you find joy doing f2/3 paper, i think you should finish the entire acca slowly and complete both acca and degree together - you will have an upper advantage. if you do not want to cope with the extra workload and find that act is not that fun, its good to drop out at this early stage. you can at least get exemption for management accounting module in uni (if you pass the advanced placement test)

I was in the same situation as you (SMU bbm), if you end NS before June, you should take 4 paper

During the dec exams I tried to take 2P papers, not enough time to study.. Suggest you take 1

Given that banking is kinda slow, I think it's an added advantage.. However in my time 5 years ago, big 4 told me that if I join their audit team, it will be on an ACCA pay scale.

On the banking side, ACCA knowledge is helpful for IBD as your accounting knowledge will be deeper than the other BBA grads. Further more, your accounting modules in NUS should have better grades with less effort.

Downside is, I didn't have enough time for school's "leadership activities" and internships as I was studying for acca every summer.

Hope it helps!

hello there! Thanks for sharing this. Good to know there are people out there taking Acca on top of their bba degree. May I clarify what do you mean by "during the december exams, not enough time to study 2 P papers"? You mean during ur univrrsity study or pre-uni?

How much has Acca helped you in the banking/finance job opportunities? Or are you inclined to take up auditing after finishing ur BBA+ACCA?

Would you recommend one to study BBA (Fin/Management/Marketing) or BBA(Accountancy/Fin) in NUS on top of ACCA?

I am 25 years old now. Currently only have Diploma in Accountancy studies from Kaplan.

Is it too late for me to enroll for ACCA now?
I have friends who did ACCA at the age of 30 and above , besides they're working full time or running family business, nothing is too late :) Another advantage of you coming from Accounting Diploma background is that you'll get exemptions for at least 3 papers.

Guys I have been thinking of this for a while and have decided to share with you my serious career stumbling obstacle and dilemma on what I should do going forward.

I have currently an ACCA full member and CA member paying the full yearly subscription fees.

As of now my qualifications are only ACCA. I do not have a degree. I have been working for the past 8 years with various companies doing accounting/finance/audit/financial analyst jobs

However I am already starting to feel the burn out as I lost my passion and drive for the industry. There have been major obstacles which I have faced and facing now with regards to high expectations and I feel that with my current state, I don't think I will be able to excel further. And my introvert and timid nature only aggravates this.

I want to be able to explore other options or even a career switch. But considering that I have spent the past more than 10 years to reach where I am right now, I don't know if it's a wise choice.

I have been quite directionless for the past few months and I have grown very fearful of what my bleak career prospects would be like if I continue like this. Furthermore I have plans for marriage and settling down, so this is becoming a very serious problem.

Any career guidance or counselling advice is welcomed.
Do you have other passion other than this industry? If not, maybe provide tuition or lecture for you have practiced in this profession if you wouldn't want to waste all your 10 years effort as you mentioned, just my personal thoughts on utilising your knowledge and taking consideration of your future family plan right now.

But again if you have a passion or dream, it's still worth starting all over again which means by taking baby steps? search for possible course that's available for the area you would love to pursue?

Hope this helps!

Yo FinalTidus,

Like you, i am an ACCA grad. I have been in this industry for almost 10 years too.

How come you feel burn out?

Passion and Drive? Are you still with Public Accounting?

Heres my take,

If you are still with the public accounting, consider leaving - switching to commercial or banks. Market is bad now though, try to find a nice co. Get use to a stable life, then pick up some hobby.

If you are not with the public accounting, already in commercial, then just suck it up. I bet you are earning a decent salary but is lacking on your lifestyle portion. Build up a lifestyle, pick up some hobby =P

Exploring option for career switch is very limited to a professional. You don't really see a Doctor becomes a Lawyer, or a Lawyer becomes an Engineer. This is life of a professional. Inherent. Cannot be change. You know that if you want to change, you might need to start all over again - hence will affect your current payscale/lifestyle.

Don't psycho yourself that you are burn out. I think everyones get tired after a period of time - perhaps change of environment(?) but maintain your skill.

In life, Career is not 100%. There is still Family, Friends, Personal Interest and your SO.

Career is something to sustain your lifestyle, build on some other things. You will feel happier.

There is no perfect company, there is no perfect job.

Cheers.

Thanks for both your kind advice...

I have been in accounting for roughly 5 years and now FP&A for 2 years plus.

I find the long hours really drains my energy and hope that I can look into a better work life balance. But it seems in this industry work-life balance is really a luxury.

But yah maybe u are right... I need a new environment. But now the horrible economy is so bad... I am not sure if I can find a job in the near future based on my needs.

But thanks anyway for your advice. I will still try to move on and strive.

Hello, I'm a NSF taking ACCA too. Which paper are you taking now? I'm taking F8 and F6 currently. My last two F papers then I'll be left with only the two optional papers after ORD. But my plan is to find a job after ORD - getting experience is more important to me. At the same time I'm worried about whether the big 4 accepts those fresh ACCA grads with good results, but, without any prior experience.
In my opinion you should focus solely on pursuing the NUS degree, get good results for it and in the meantime, get some skills, join multiple clubs. It is very likely employers will only look at your NUS degree and ignore the ACCA qualification. But of course it is good to take it now in NS so you can be much more prepared than others when you're in uni.

you should take acca. fia is more basic and less recognised. meanwhile u should consider sqp foundational programme.

FIA is diploma only. ACCA is professional accounting cert which allows you to become an accountant provided you have met the necessary requirements.

i have both. my advice is for you to just go for acca. FIA is really not recognized at all in the job market. I have employers asking me what's FIA

Thanks Fearah and Duff11 for the reply. I only have higher nitec in accounting and is in my 30s, I know i'm too old to study :( I have quit poly a few times because cannot cope with many presentations and projects while having a full time job. I thought maybe ACCA or FIA is more flexible timetable for me and more related to daily work.

Now I just want to get a diploma first and will continue with the rest of the papers if everything is ok. Are both FIA diploma and ACCA diploma certificate the same ? FIA diploma has the words FIA on it and ACCA diploma has the words ACCA on it?

Not sure will it be ok to put ACCA diploma on the resume after pass F1 to F3 papers? Will employers recognize it? Thanks for the advices, no wonder when I search FIA on the jobs website nothing really show up.

there is nothing to be ashamed about :) i know mnay people about 30 are still studying acca part time - many of them are my part time classmates.

you can get a diploma in biz and act upon completing f123

employers are mostly looking for those persuing professional papers/affiate/members.
