Assam laksa think the one in the coffee shop beside the famous chen dol not bad
Ckt must try either ah leng or Siam road ckt
lor mee can try Kim leng lor mee
Kopi tiam think toh soon cafe not bad

Thanks for the recommendations.

Is it worth going to Air Itam for the assam laksa? I see on the map that it's rather far from Georgetown area. I'm also emphasizing on the assam laksa because my wife n mother are only looking forward to eating assam laksa the entire trip.

Will have 1 full-day in Penang next Friday (06:00 - 22:00). Our purpose in Penang is purely food. We have identified the the following dishes :

1. Air Itam Assam Laksa (The only one we would travel out of the way for)
2. Char Kuey Teow (Suggestions?)
3. Hokkien Mee (Suggestions?)
4. Lor Mee (Suggestions?)
5. Nasi Kandar (Not a priority but if it's along the way)
6. Really good kopitiam kopi (Suggestions?)
7. Wanton Mee ( If it's worth it as compared to say Medan/Singapore/BKK)
8. Anything else we can try?

Using Sunway Hotel Georgetown as the center, would appreciate some guide and tips to maximise our time given our location to eat as much food as possible within our 1 day frame.

Thanks in advance!

Sunway Hotel area is a Food Paradise surely! I can say that area is really a place to satisfy your craving for food 24/7! Using Sunway Hotel as the center, you can really find alot of delicious, never-to-be-missed Penang local food. But I shall suggest based on your list of food to eat here on the places that you can find those food to satisfy your hunger.

1. Air Itam Assam Laksa- Please don't go there. Not worth your time to try. Quality and taste has gone down these days. Plus,it is kind of pricey recently. Too commercial for Penangites point of view as the locals DON'T eat Laksa there. I have shared my suggestions for the BEST Laksa to eat in Penang, the stall that is worth to explore for Laksa and my reasons for rejecting the Air Itam Laksa and also suggesting other Laksa. It is really worth the try. Read my sharing here. http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/malaysia-269/two-cents-sharing-penang-4903325.html

2. Char Kuey Teow- Either Siam Road or Padang Brown

3. Hokkien Mee- Kampung Melayu or Ah Soon Kor Hokkien Mee at Sin Kim San. Sin Kim San coffee shop is just 10 mins walk from Sunway Hotel. It is located along Macalister where you can find the place right opposite the Petron petrol station.

4. Lor Mee- Million Loh Mee at Jalan Van Praagh is BETTER and much more awesome than Kim Leng's.

5. Nasi Kandar- Along Air Itam Road. Just opposite the Air Itam Laksa stall. There is a T junction where if you turn right, you are heading to Kek Lok Si Temple. If you keep left,go straight up,you will see a small Nasi Kandar stall on your left. Very delicious and explosive!!

6. Really good kopitiam kopi- Chowrasta market. There is a small kopitiam, in fact it is just a small stall selling kopi. It is located at one of the alley along Chowrasta Market. The kopi the is really ummmppphh!! Local authentic kopi that is surely cheaper and more satisfying than the one you have it in any cafe.

7. Wanton Mee- Chulia Street. You can find one of the most delicious Wantan Mee in Penang at Chulia Street. The stall only open from 6 pm onwards. The stall is located just beside a furniture shop. There is only one big furniture shop there.

8. Anything else we can try?Of course. The list goes on.

1. Chee Cheong Fun at Genting Coffee Shop, Island Glades
2. Penang Famous Teow Chew Chendol at Lebuh Kheng Kwee off Penang Road
3. Kueh Chap at Kimberley Street
4. Pork Organ Noodles at Kampung Malabar (My all time fav!!! Everytime never miss this when I am back to Penang)
5. Hai Boey Seafood
6. Bali Hai Food Court at Sungai Pinang
7. New Lane Street food. Right outside of Sunway Hotel
8. Padang Brown for the Char Kuey Teow, Yong Tau Foo, Lok-Lok, Mee Siam (My favourite place for lunch as I can order all these food at one go. Whack till so full that I only had my dinner at 9 pm. I can share the pictures at my post here soon: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/malaysia-269/two-cents-sharing-penang-4903325.html"]http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/malaysia-269/two-cents-sharing-penang-4903325.html"]http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/malaysia-269/two-cents-sharing-penang-4903325.html )
9. Dim Sum at Macalister Road just opposite BSN Bank (My another all time favourite!!! Never miss it when I go back Penang!)
10. Apom Guan at Burma Road.
11. Mee Goreng at Bangkok Lane

All these places that I have recommended here are purely local favourites. Which means, I am sharing with you places that ONLY or mostly patronize by the locals, places where Penangites love to eat in. These are the places that you can really find and taste the authentic taste of local food in Penang which is not too commercialize plus not too pricey. I based my suggestions on three key points:

a) Price of food (Reasonable?)
b) Taste of food (Many stalls selling CKT,Wan Tan Mee also)
c) Local favourites

a. Why price?
So many stalls are selling Laksa or Char Kuey Teow for example. One stall can sell RM 5/plate, the other RM 4/plate while the next one at RM 4.50/plate. Which one to choose then? What are their differences as in the ingredients, quantity and taste?

If any food in Penang that manage to fulfill all these 3 criterias, that is when I will share & suggest it to all my friends, colleagues and guests from all over the world. I can be sure that you will have a great experience enjoying all these mouth watering, awesome Penang food plus I would say, you will feel wasted and regret if you never visited these places that I mentioned above.

Anyway, MOST of these places are kind of difficult to find or even reach by your own. This is because the places that I have suggested here are mostly located in local areas instead of those tourist spot. Therefore, it is BEST to have a Local Guide to bring you around to explore these food Hassle free & Conveniently. Some places are almost impossible to go by bus as there may not have any bus services and cabbies are not familiar too.

Well, too many places to recommend to you here. Hope you will have ample time and enough tank to store all these food that you are going to try in Penang.

Hope everyone will benefit from my sharing here and feel free to Call/Whatsapp me on the number stated below if you are looking for a One Stop Solution on Accommodation, Car Rental & Tour services in Penang. Cheers! :s13: :)

Some of you may have read Andrew mentioned the popular Penang street foods. I am not going to duplicate what he mentioned earlier. For those love seafood and have no intention to drive to mainland, Tambun. Other good place for seafood is Pulau Betong, Balik Pulau. There is no Rapid Penang bus station by nearby. The best way is hiring a car or self drive.

There are two chinese restaurants there, diners are free to buy fresh seafood from fishermen market at the walking distance from the restaurants. They are happy to prepare and cook the seafood for you at reasonable price. The total price is definitely much lower than any seafood restaurants in Penang and taste is not losing to popular tourist restaurants like Oriental Seafood Restaurant and etc.

How much is it to get a vehicle for 7 adults in penang. Or is it better to just get a cab

That depends on certain service provider. Some can provide good and delighting service at an affordable price. If you have 7 adults,it will cost an exorbitant sum of money to explore around Penang Island for the whole day by cab.

Imagine you ask the cab to wait for you while you have your lunch and the cab metre keep running. There are also not many 7 seater cab available in Penang. The most the cab operator will suggest you to hire 2 cabs to go around Penang while will then separate your families/friends when touring Penang.

For more info and sharing, you can read my personal post here on whether to hire a vehicle + local guide to bring you around Penang or just get a cab: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/malaysia-269/two-cents-sharing-penang-4903325-4.html

Just a question to ask, will be taking tigerair to penang next month.

Do I have to fill in any immigration card to pass the custom? Or just like how we normally enter J.B by car, only need passport, no need to fill in any immigration card?

Any expert can advice?

You can take a cab there. It'll cost RM 30, fixed. Or, if you can, use Grab Taxi.

Other option is to take a bus. Walk over to Komtar and take the bus, Rapid Penang. I believe it's number 204. Better confirm. I took this a few months back. No problems with the bus and it's cheap.

Hi..

This is my first time to Penang and need help of experts here.

Apart from the food, what else is there to do in Penang?

Are the museums worth going or is there 1 particular one that is a must go?

Any other recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

You may visit Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (guided tour and checked its tour schedules), Pinang Peranakan Mansion and Khoo Kongsi.

For Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, no photo is allowed and take about 45 minutes for the guided tour. Other museums are depending on yourself interests.

Hello all!

I will be going to Penang with a friend next month for 3d2n. Wanted to check how do you guys usually go around in Georgetown, Penang? Walk or trishaw?

We will be staying at Glow Penang in Jalan Macalister, Georgetown. Is there any must-try foods near the hotel?

Also, do you guys buy prepaid data sim for your trips to Penang? A little afraid of getting lost there, especially if we are cabbing.
