Echofiendly, sent ya PM. :)

osirisx, yes XM2 has a wee bit less airflow, but not by much. You won't notice it in real life.

Got deal for the replacement filter only? :s

The usual seller I bought from, now $74 per piece. Free shipping. Can use coupon tho'.

Unless you have attractive coupons to use... else not very attractive pricing compared to the past.

Can order with extra filter at $59. Really good deal if u have no coupon to use.

Can still use the gift card methods, buy 3x100 gift card for $291.

Cheers!

The $69 listed by DAISO is not for AX40 right?
http://list.qoo10.sg/item/SAMSUNG-FILTER-SAMSUNG-AX020FCVANDD-AX037FCVAUWD/414386752

How about taobao?

Is not. For AX40 filter, add $20 for this seller. And also shipping not free. Lagi not worth it. Might as well get from the other seller - HappyMall. $74 free shipping. If u have the year end $10 cart coupon, can use it. Item coupon $1 can use it. If u buy 2, then can use $10 item coupon. Also don't forget shop coupon.

U can use gift card (additional of 3% rebate). U can go calculate buy from Qoo10 cheaper or from Taobao (make sure u include shipping fee for forwarders in Taobao). ;)

For me, I buy from Qoo10 when I have those attractive event coupons $50, $100 cart coupons. Less than a week arrived and in Samsung box, made in Korea.

There are also other sellers... U can find cheaper than $74 actually. Try do a search. ;)

But I not sure if authentic or if come with box for them.

Interesting thing is that the best deals were found in early Nov, during the trailing end of the haze season.

Now the APs in retail stores are all regular prices.

Dont think the AX40 can hit a timesale price of 279 without coupons again (with 1 additional filter)

great info but i need to ask something:

http://list.qoo10.sg/item/SAMSUNG-FREE-2-FILTERS-SAMSUNG-AIR-PURIFIER/436305111

can this AP cover 4S flat? what is the difference between model AX40H5000GMD or AX40H5000UWD?

also, can i turn on the AP every day ? i have a dog recently and it seems i've been coughing often. also, how long can a filter lasts?

If the dog is indeed the issue coz it's producing some allergen that your body does not like, then unfortunately I'd have to pass this sad piece of news to you.......be prepared to part with the dog.

That is, IF you manage to find a schedule routine to keep it clean enough so that the allergens are kept to a minimum, then yeah you can keep it.
It is possible that you will get sicker as time goes by, similar it is possible that it is not the dog. You'd have to do your own investigation.

Getting heckloads of air purifiers is only part of the answer. It may also be a very small part of the picture or even negligible even, depending on how the allergens fly and affect you.

Usually the best number 1 answer is this - Get rid of the allergen, or at least control it. Air purifiers, cleaning the floor/bedsheets are all secondary. It's the same for the other extreme end, cleanroom ops...that's why they wrap until bah zhang.

But to ans your question, generally I'd advise getting something that has 5X Air Changes Per Hour for allergic cases. For severe allergy cases, 8-10X air changes per hour is not unheard of, ie brute force approach.

Hence, the AX40 is suitable for an ~ 20 sqm space for 5 ACH. For 10 ACH, it's 10 sqm or the size of the new BTO bedrooms.

And of course, APs only work in AC rooms. ie if you open the windows and there is a wind blowing, don't expect the AP to be contributing anything. Similarly, don't expect even a 13k BTU/hr aircon to be cooling the room down, much.

I also not exactly sure what's the difference between the 2 models. Design is different. Weight I think also different. Other than that not sure.

But I happened to see this... The G model seems to have a higher CADR as compared to the U model. :s22:

Note: I not sure whether these 2 models cited below are the same as the korea ones u enquired about.

http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/home-appliances/air-conditioners/air-purifier/AX40H5001GM/NA
AX40H5001GM
CADR (㎥/h)
327

http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/home-appliances/air-conditioners/air-purifier/AX40H5000UW/NA
AX40H5000UW
CADR (㎥/h)
310

I only have the G model. You can switch on the AP every day. No issue. I have been switching on every night since I bought the APs. I have placed one each inside 2 bedrooms.

I not sure about the rest. But both my AX40 have very tint "charcoal-like" smell. Similar to the recent haze smell (I bought after the haze period to replace my old Honeywell AP, so that smell not due to the haze).

The smell actually comes from the filter. Test without filter, machine no smell. With new or used filter, tint smell detected. Probably is because of the charcoal. Not 100% sure.

I don't experience that smell on my Honeywell (with CPZ filter). But Honeywell is comparatively "louder" and higher power consumption etc.

As to whether APs will resolve your coughing, I not sure. I also have dog at home. No issue.

Not sure if your cough really due to the dog. If u want, can go for an allergic test. Might not be.

Just sharing.

Yeah, if the allergen is heavy, then air purifiers would not help.....coz then it would not float.

For dust mite droppings, they go down to 10 microns (upper range 40-50 microns) so they do float quite a fair amt. And one does toss and turn during the night. So in this case, it helps quite a fair bit as it's a significant contributor.

Just share a source that I have come across last time
http://www.nchh.org/Portals/0/Contents/Article0243.pdf

In cultures, more than 95% of mite allergen Der
p 1 was associated with mite feces (mean diameter of 22
± 6 mm; range, 10 to 40 mm).1 Domestic air sampling in
bedrooms during dust disturbance showed that greater
than 80% of detectable Der p 1 was associated with particles
larger than 10 um and only a small proportion with
particles smaller than 5 um, the identity of which is not
known.

In summary, we have identified feces, fibers, and
flakes as sources of inhaled mite aeroallergen. Although
the majority of allergen is carried on larger particles,
some is carried on smaller particles and on heterologous
particles, which behave aerodynamically as small particles.
These particles could be inhaled more readily into
the lungs and cause airway inflammation.

-------------------------------

Also, it makes sense that 10 microns might reach slightly mid portions of the lungs. But 40/50 microns have no issue hitting the nasal passages.

So, in this way, asthmatic trigger incidences would not be exactly the same as allergic rhinitis trigger incidences, for dust mite droppings.

In any case, for the first few weeks of "Air purifier theraphy", it is always good to blow your body and face with a fan, let the airflow carry the allergens away, then the air purifier lower the in-room concentration. And as advised above, a 5X ACH or 8-10ACH is needed, depending on severity.

Once your inflamed sites at your respiratory tract is healed, you'd find that a much higher trigger level would be needed before you get symptoms of the allergy, ie you are not as sensitive. Hence, you'd have "recovered". I put "" quotes coz in real life you'd never recover to the level that is enjoyed by non-sufferers, just to a level that is much better so that you can have a higher quality of life and not rely on antihistamines, some of which are drowsy (1st gen) coz the non-drowsy ones are slightly less effective. :) And I have come across a few in which they are so jialuck and hypersensitive that 2 x chloropheniramine also CMI (not advisable to take 2 tabs actually).

If given a choice is AX40 or XM2/1 a better choice? The only issue now is the availability and price, and cost of replacement filter. Does the Ax40 have cheap taobao filter replacement?

Yes, you can choose either one.

AX40 needs 310 x 281mm.

RMB29.90
300x300mm (cut yourself, and plug the gap yourself). 25mm depth only
http://world.taobao.com/item/41163239668.htm?spm=a312a.7700714.0.0.74Xx6A#detail

But I'd recommend the slightly bigger version, 400x300mm. 25mm depth only.
https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a312a.7700824.w4004-8871129750.20.1brMeX&id=41217104703

The sides, you can use this PU 1cm tape to tape. Optional though.

Use this during the regular months, like present conditions.

Note : This would cut the 300+ m3/hr airflow down to approx 220 m3/hr airflow + power consumption down to 19W. Luckily the dB SPL also goes down. Take it as a medium speed of the Samsung AX40. :) Why medium speed? Coz the AX40 only has high fan speed setting, low fan speed setting (and then Auto fan speed, and sleep mode, which are both pretty useless in reality in both allergy cases as well as 2015 haze scenarios). No medium speed. Don't ask me why, coz I have no idea.

If you need low 300+ m3/hr airflow, then the original is the only option. Actually it can be boosted to ~ 350 m3/hr if you slice away the activated charcoal filter layer with a scissors/penknife. Unfortuantely, the cheap $49.90 qoo10 timesale shipped with registered post (FOC) no more liao.

This seems a little confusing. Anyone bought this before?

http://www.qoo10.sg/g/436305111/Q101049988

Is it free 1 additional filter or 2 additional filter? It says 2 free filter but then at the bottom of the page, it says 1 is installed in the filter?

The so called free 2 filters means
1. New filter inside the AX40 purifier
(remember to remove the plastic cover)
2. Another extra new filter (comes with box)

In other words, only 1 additional filter. The other one already inside the AX40 purifier.

Joej, go for the AX40 pack first. Later in April or May, go for the XM2 on TB. Then in June/July......you may wish to stock up the XM filter pack and also the DIY 百姓 commoner HEPA, for the AX40. Then get your wife some Taobao gal goodies for cheap so that she'd not nag at your new toys.
I find the Fitflops (cheong) to be pretty ok...etc.

Problem solved forever from all angles, really. :s13:
