Temperature rises, hotspots reappear in Riau | The Jakarta Post

Temperature rises, hotspots
reappear in Riau

Rizal Harahap, The Jakarta Post, Pekanbaru | Archipelago | Wed, June 18 2014, 9:41 AM

The heat wave projected for Riau is now taking place, with temperatures climbing to 36 degrees Celsius and the number of hotspots further increasing under the conditions.

Based on observations by the Pekanbaru Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the maximum temperature in the daytime in some parts of Riau has been categorized as “extreme”.

“The temperature in Pekanbaru is still within tolerable levels, with a maximum level of 35 degrees Celsius. But in other regions, the temperature is already extreme,” said Pekanbaru BMKG analysis staff member Ardhitama on Tuesday.

The temperature in various regencies and cities across the province has tended to rise over the past few days. In Pekanbaru, for instance, the temperature ranged between 33.2 and 34.6 degrees Celsius on June 15.

It rose the following day to 35 degrees Celsius. In Pelalawan regency, the temperature ranged between 33.6 and 35 degrees Celsius. “The hottest was recorded in Dumai city with 36 degrees Celsius,” said Ardhitama.

The rise in temperature has caused the reappearance of forest and land fires across the region. Based on observations by the Terra and Aqua satellites on June 16, the number of hotspots amounted to 21, more than half of which were detected in Rokan Hilir regency.

On Tuesday morning, the satellites detected 37 hotspots in Riau. Rokan Hilir still dominated with 16 hotspots, followed by Pelalawan (8), Bengkalis (4), Dumai (3), Siak (2), as well as Meranti Islands, Indragiri Hilir, Kuantan Sengingi and Rokan Hulu with one hotspot each.

The growing number of hotspots has contributed to the recurrence of mild haze in a number of regions. In Pelalawan and Dumai, visibility has dropped to around 4 kilometers and 5 km, respectively.

“The weather will be cloudy and sunny for the next few days. The chance of rain is quite low, but it may occur in the western and southern parts of Riau,” said Ardhitama.

To anticipate a surge in the number of hotspots, Riau Governor Annas Maamun on Tuesday gathered Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) members to discuss haze supervision and prevention.

After the meeting, Riau Police chief Brig. Gen. Condro Kirono said Forkopimda had agreed to 13 comprehensive measures that would be applied in the short, medium and long term to anticipate forest and peatland fires in Riau.

One of the crucial points was to issue a provincial ordinance that will regulate the protection and management of the ecosystem, to ensure that peatlands are constantly wet throughout the year.

“The ordinance is aimed at being immediately implemented in the fourth week of July this year,” said Condro.

Other important points are the planned mapping of areas prone to forest and peatland fires in Riau to enhance the capacity of regional and municipal administrations in forest and peatland fire prevention efforts, as well as accelerating the formation of the Concerned about Fire Community in every region.

“The obedience of companies operating in concession areas that are prone to hotspots will also be assessed, including their readiness for firefighting efforts [demonstrated] by forming firefighting teams,” Condro went on.

“A situation room will be set up and will function as a monitoring, prevention and fire response center, as well as enhancing communications between relevant agencies at the provincial and regency and municipal levels.”

Indonesia's haze pollution defences not enough, says green group

Published: June 18, 2:02 PM

(Page 1 of 2) - NEXT PAGE | SINGLE PAGE

JAKARTA - Indonesia's promises to tackle the upcoming annual haze season with a US$30 million fund and limited military equipment have been called into question by experts anticipating worse pollution levels than last year due to the El Nino weather pattern.

Indonesia has failed in previous attempts to stop the regional haze, with last year giving the worst pollution readings since 1997. Outgoing Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was forced in mid-2013 to apologise to neighbours Singapore and Malaysia, which were blanketed in thick smog caused by forest fires in Indonesia.

With expectations high that the El Nino dry weather pattern will hit around the middle of the year, the haze could be worse than in 2013, conservation experts told Reuters.

"We are talking hundreds of thousands of hectares that will probably burn and I doubt (the government) will be able to cover this much of an area," said David Gaveau, a scientist at the Center for International Forestry Research, a conservation organisation based in Indonesia.

"We're expecting El Nino and if it comes, we're going to see much more fires than last year."

The heavy smoke from slash-and-burn clearances often comes from the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, where large forest concessions are used by pulp and paper and palm oil companies, some of which are listed in Singapore.

Both palm and pulp and paper companies, which blame small-holders for the fires, have been criticised by green groups for not doing enough to stop the haze or the rampant deforestation and destruction of carbon-rich peatlands in Indonesia.

"Anything to do with fighting the fire as it happens is fine, but this is not really going to tackle the problem of why there is a fire in the first place," Gaveau added. "The root problem is overlapping claims over land ownership."

As a sign of things to come, earlier this year Indonesia's Riau province off Sumatra island declared a state of emergency as haze from raging forest fires disrupted flights and marine navigation and tens of thousands fell sick with respiratory problems. The airport in the provincial capital closed for more than three weeks.

To prepare this year, Indonesia has put aside US$30 million and will have 2,500 military personnel on standby, with 15 aeroplanes and helicopters helping with water-bombing, monitoring and cloud-seeding efforts, Sutopo Nugroho, spokesman at the Indonesian disaster management agency, told Reuters.

Singapore has also offered assistance in assessing and putting out forest fires in Indonesia and proposed a law to punish individuals and companies outside its borders that are responsible for polluting its air.

With presidential elections due to take place on July 9, Yudhoyono, who has reached his two-term limit, introduced a moratorium on forest clearing during his ten years in office and will be keen to maintain his environmental credentials.

"This year we have prepared the technology and ... local governments have also been asked to identify and arrest the perpetrators early," Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono told Reuters. REUTERS

Auto mode is pre-programmed by Samsung to vary the airflow depending on the readings from its sensors.
eg if air is relatively clean, it will lower the airflow, and vice versa.

So in that sense, you can't tune its sensitivity.
But do remember to periodically clean the sensors as per the maintenance manual.

Oic...I thought same as sharp can tune auto mode sensitivity. ..now new sharp model even got haze mode as marketing gimmick...I normally ion shower for an hr then it auto to auto mode. How to clean sensor for sharp?

Sharp air purifier

I got a sharp air purifier from here.

rakuten.com.sg/shop/parisilk/product/KC-A40E/

So far it has been good. It gets the job done and the air in my house is cleaner. Still cannot really tell the effect on our health. Maybe we will when the haze is back :s22::(

Means blowing our way?

Right now the hotspots ard Dumai are blowing towards KL - Penang. Still nothing serious, coz number of hotspots not high + fire intensity/fire area of each hotspot not big i guess.

If Jambi area hotspots also jump in numbers, we'd also kena.

Wind is SW.

1600hrs - number of hotspots 174 (96 yesterday).

You see that cluster there, that is very near Dumai. And diagonally upwards and to the right is KL.

The Kuala Lumpur skyline at 7pm shrouded in haze. The reading for Cheras jumped to 104, in the unhealthy zone, as at 6pm. — TRP pic by Farah Harith

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19:

Malaysians had to endure a hazy situation today when visibility dropped this afternoon.

According to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry’s Department of Environment website, certain places, including Putrajaya, have been recording increasing Air Pollutant Index (API) readings since this afternoon.

Readings at 2pm today put Batu Muda, Kuala Lumpur, in the “unhealthy” category with the highest API readings of 118.

This was followed by Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang (100), Seremban (99), SK Jalan Pegoh, Ipoh (97) and Cheras (94), all within the borderline “unhealthy” zone.

By 4pm, API for Seremban was reduced to 95, while Jalan Tasek, Ipoh and Banting recorded API readings of 88.

The haze in Batu Muda got worse with an API reading of 124, with Putrajaya and Shah Alam recording API readings of 100 and 90 respectively.

While Batu Muda recorded a significant drop to 69 as at 5pm, Putrajaya recorded a slight increase to 104.

At 6pm, Cheras went up to 104 while Putrajaya dropped significantly to 68.

You can use this url below to see firemap for Indonesia, Msia, Kalimantan. Source is from Terra and Aqua satellites.
Just change http.s to https as I can't post link.

I use the email alerts, just put your email address, mark out the area of interest, and it'd send you about 4 emails per day regarding the situation.
V good.

Well if you are prepared (am sure many in this thread would have prepared), I am sure it won't be an issue if we have another freak show of very dense haze like last year, or an extended bout of moderate @ 200 but for an extended period like 1-2 months this round.

In fact with an extended period of PSI @ 150-250 for eg, you wouldn't even need N95 even if you belong to the sensitive group. China's KN90 masks and FFP-1 masks (eg UVEX brand) more than suffice enough. Coz N95 for the general "fit" public can only tahan like 30 mins max 60 mins. Else headache/dizziness sets in due to oxygen deprivation. But if you are fit enough and are in good shape and remember not to walk fast, then go ahead and use it when using public transport etc. Just take deep enough breaths to max your oxygen intake. At home is use air purifier liao.

For the preggie/elderly, definitely use FFP-1 or KN90 WITH exhaust valve.
