I also have the sharp kc840.

Ok, its like this. The samsung ax40 has a small negative in the sense that it only has high speed (323 m3/hr airflow) and low speed (v v silent). Auto speed works like low speed in real life...and Sleep speed is too low an output to be of any use.

The samsung ax40 in high speed sounds like its slightly more silent than the kc840 in turbo ion shower mode.

So how it may work in your case is that turn it on for 1 hr in high speed to scrub the air, then select low speed for sleeping.

Must remember that it is blowing some 323m^3/hr in high speed. The kc840 is about 216m^3/hr.

Chuanz is correct - there is no mid speed.

Plasma ion, just ok lah. Don't think most would feel any difference with it.

Main thing is the HEPA. It definitely works with smoke haze particles even down to 0.1 microns (ultrafine particles), there are lot of posts before this with tests and vids. Info overload, but just take it that it works.

The most important thing in letting the room feel fresher is to keep the air-con FCU clean and also your bedsheet clean for starters.

Even in a cleanroom with tons and magnitudes better filtration (eg jamming the equivalent of 20pcs of Samsung AX40 and changing the HEPA-13 filter in it to ULPA-15 or above), you'd still need to remove all sources of contamination.

SW monsoon actually predominant wind dir is SE to S. Only sometimes varies to SW dir. W dir is v rare.

You can google for the pdfs from NEA and other agencies, they documented the chronology of events.

There were 2 tropical storms (1 grade below cat 1 typhoon) that causes the wind to changed to W in 2013 haze episode. The 2 tropical storms tracked to hanoi...quite "southerly".

This time round 2 days...typhoon kalmaegi caused the winds to shift to SW briefly.

Smoke out since 1600h just now. Fairly bad @ 1800h. 2-3km visibility.

My PM2.5 monitor (senses down to 0.8 microns) also showing elevated readings.

The wind has been blowing SE/SSE the whole day long.

How come there is haze, somemore fairly bad? (shd only get that when it turns SW and blows part of it to us).

Need to check the satellite photos later.
