LOL, just now at 6pm, it was clear enough to be able to see Batam quite clearly. But 3-hr PSI PM2.5 was still 89. Even now is 84.

That's how slow the 3-hr moving average is.

http://www.haze.gov.sg/haze-updates/psi

With effect from 1 April 2014, Singapore will move to an integrated air quality reporting index, where PM2.5 will be incorporated into the current Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) as its sixth pollutant parameter. The PSI will therefore reflect a total of six pollutants - sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3).

The 3-hr PSI will take into account PM2.5 concentrations. In addition, NEA will also publish the 1-hr PM2.5 concentrations every hour.

Palembang getting smoked really hard with visibility @ 500m at 0600hr today. Definitely PSI 400+ conditions. (June 21st 2013 our visibility in SG dropped to 0.4km for PSI 401)

The 3-hr PSI moving average is really somewhat slow. The conditions here down south + my PM2.5 monitor has been steady since about 9+AM (my above post was 8.49am visual sighting), but 2PM 3-hr PSI moving average is still rising. In fact now 2+PM I think conditions have improved quite a bit.

I am sure most folks wouldn't wanna be swimming (hot weather) for 1 to 1.5hrs for 20 laps out in this kind of air.

NEA reported that they will do 1-hr NEA readings, but it's still not yet implemented as of now. Check the source from nea.gov.sg, the info is all there with regards to 1-hr readings.

Like what China and the US Embassy have been doing, and yes they also report 24-hr etc.

My PM2.5 monitor is sometimes spiking up and down depending on wind speed.

Eg
Beijing PM2.5-Beijing AQI-China PM2.5

Main Air Pollutants: PM2.5

Health Implications:Air quality is acceptable, but maybe unhealthy to a small number of sensitive groups.

Beijing PM2.5

1-hour PM2.5: 73.92μg/m3,
24-hour PM2.5: 37.62μg/m3.
1-hour PM2.5 ranks #127 in China by ascending,total 190 cities.
1-hour PM10: 145.17μg/m3,
24-hour PM10: 88.07μg/m3.
3 hour reading is already bad. 24 hour reading is plain evil.

How much does a pm2.5 reader costs?

Well, that minister who said that the 24-hr PSI reading is more important has a point too since the effects are also cumulative in nature. Just that personally it really smoothen things out too much and for this year 2014 kind of ON/OFF haze it really serves no purpose. Healthy individuals I guess 99.9% no issues, but not for those in the sensitive group, including pregnant women (ie nobody in her right mind would want to even be a passive smoker).

For me I am quite ngeow for 2014, my youngest kid is just 9 months old, just luckily not below 6 months when development + body resistance is most critical. In March there was a short period of 1 week haze though, even with an air purifier in the room, he occasionally sneezed more when he was brought out into the living room.

March 2014 24-hr PM2.5
156749937.fxEVoUrf.haze_singapore156.jpg

Cumulative in nature...
It's been 1 month already, the light haze started since Sep 1st and for most of the time....offhand, i'd guess about 70-80% of the time the 24-hr PM2.5 hovers just slightly below the Unhealthy limit for the Sensitive group? There were a few spikes, they never showed up on NEA 3-hr PSI figures, they showed up on my PM2.5 monitor. Unfortunately it's not an accurate one, I could only derive relative readings/comparisons. But yes they showed up alright + backed up visually (not the other way round).

Right now, it reads 24-hr PM2.5(µg/m3) 39 ug/m3 for West, which reflects as AQI PM2.5 of 109 (and actually still rising as of now even though Batam became visible since 3 hours ago). AQI is directly comparable to what China is using, which is the same AQI.
Pollutant Concentrations

For comparison, Beijing's 24-hr PM2.5 (today) is just 37.62ug/m3. The only difference is that it recorded the spike for 1-hr PM2.5. Just now for 2-hrs, NEA published did not, though the spike was not a lot.
1-hour PM2.5: 73.92μg/m3,
24-hour PM2.5: 37.62μg/m3.

Last weekend before F1 or during F1 hrs (depending on which part of the island you are located, the small but dense cloud does take time to travel even though SG is small), somebody else posted in another thread a measured a peak of 250 ug/m3 and nominally 160-170ug/m3 of PM2.5. That works out to be an AQI of 300 for the peak and about AQI 200 nominally.
That was by a BRAMC PM2.5 air quality monitor, it's not gonna be accurate, but it does give you a decent idea.

PM2.5 monitors are cheapest on taobao. You'd need to do international forwarding via the official forwarders. There is a dedicated taobao support thread here in EDMW....lots of help there.

The guy in another thread used this BRAMC PM2.5 air quality monitor. This is LED based, and also has either a formaldehyde sensor in it or a VOC/Volatile Organic Compound sensor in it.
BRAMC

Other models, just for info
pm2.5

However, I would recommend a laser based sensor, the cheapest run about rmb700.

But seriously, also no point getting a PM2.5 monitor now, since the $$$ is better spent on getting air purifiers and the haze is ending. Unless your bonus high 5-figures gao gao. :D

For healthy persons who are not allergic/susceptible to extended light haze, then it's really a moot point. :D

I guess such "gadgets" are really useful for those who are chronic asthmatic esp the young kids/babies. I know someone who has a neubiliser on standby 24/7 now coz she went into A&E a few times last year.
It's no joke for some.

Thanks to another EDMWer who pointed out that NEA does publish 1-hr PM2.5 figures, I now stand corrected.

Actually it's in the same link that I have been posting in this thread and other haze threads. :s22:

Just that I didn't see properly, and
(1) it doesn't help that the page reports that "there is no sub-
index for PM2.5 data
(2) you gotta pull down the drop down box and select PM2.5, coz the default is sulphur dioxide. :s22:
(3) the web page states >>
Note:
a Sub-index for nitrogen dioxide is reported only when the 1-hr concentration equals or exceeds 1130 µg/m3.

b There is no sub-index for 1-hr PM2.5.

Anyway, it's here, under Pollutant Concentrations on the leftmost frame.

So...too bad. There is no historical data saved for 1-hr PM2.5 for last week's 2hrs dense haze on 21st Sep on F1 race day. They only save historical data for 24-hr PM2.5 here.

Historical PSI Readings

But the good news is that I've captured today's 28th Sep data. :D
Just in time, if you check now the data's wiped out coz the date just rolled over!!

12-1PM PM2.5 highest spike at West side.

Use this to convert ug/m3 concentration into AQI PM2.5. This is 1hr PM2.5 reading, not the same as AQICN which takes 24-hr PM2.5

AQI Calculator: Concentration to AQI

64ug/m3 = AQI 155
55ug/m3 = AQI 149.
50ug/m3 = AQI 137

> 150 = Unhealthy for All Groups
> 100 = Unhealthy for Sensitive groups.

Geez, just a simple google search yielded the answer. Someone screenshot on TR Emeritus.

Sep 21 = Sunday, F1 race day.

157607227.1jlk3ADf.21Sep2014F1_1hrPM25maxed.jpg

I mentioned that someone measured nominally 160-170 ug/m3 of PM2.5, peak was 250ug/m3. On his BRAMC monitor. So against NEA's figure, that's approx. 40% "over reading".

124 ug/m3 PM2.5 = AQI 186. Comfortably into "Unhealthy for All Groups."

If we divide the BRAMC 250ug/m3 reading, we'd get 182 ug/m3.

182 ug/m3 = 236ug/m3. Very Unhealthy for All Groups.
Just another rough figure, for info, don't have to believe the last part but it's still better than no info. :D

No lah....I've gotten hold of the figures. Posted in the post above yours.

West side got the worst readings. It had 124 micrograms per m3, or AQI 186. That's probably not the peak with the wildly fluctuating readings hour by hour and location and time. It's a quite small but dense cloud.

AQI 186 (124 micrograms per m3) PM2.5 reading

I mean, daily, to keep a historical record... :)

West side getting smoked quite a bit. 54ug/m3 at 12pm
Followed by south at 46ug/m3.

54ug/m3 is AQI 147. Probably PSI 95 to 99 range.

1-hr PM2.5

Unfortunately no recommendation list. Anyway the list is pretty short....and for our light haze conditions the cheapest one does work great for the occasional use per year.

This year is prolonged haze though.

Yalor so kns... no smell haze is worse coz "silent killer"...

And now South side is damn clear. Batam lights are clearly visible.

3-hr PSI as usual averaged everything out.

Try training for 2.4km during these transient conditions, increase respiration 6X....opps.

Last week vids

Just got the samsung ax40h5000gmd... but inside is korean manual... anyone know where i can get an english manual? .. google it but no luck so far...

also how long b4 i change the filter?

and one observation is the suction of air is from the back and the filtered air is blown up to the front.. in this way isit efficient? I mean if the air is sucked from the back means not much dirty air is flowing to the back, so turning over and let the suction be at the front will suck up more dirty air faster right?
