Ambient (outdoor air pollution) in both cities and rural areas was estimated to cause 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide per year in 2012; this mortality is due to exposure to small particulate matter of 10 microns or less in diameter (PM10), which cause cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and cancers.

Actually the spike also doesn't mean much lah. Hotspots got big and small and also small until non-existent. The ones at Ogan Komering Ilir are or were very big.

Secondly, also depends on wind direction. Wind could be variable at times. Could blow NW, NE, ESE. The smoke from Palembang and nearby Ogan Komering Ilir needs to blow SE to SG in a straight line (highly unlikely) or find a way to "curve back".

Going to keep the Sharp H10 filter next year. Using this SmartAirFilter one first (SmartAirFilter on taobao, that particle counting air cannon shop in Beijing).

The dark circular mark is coz i used this for a few hours during Oct 19th haze.

3M Filtrete media expensive leh. You just want to block the bypass so that the air is going through the HEPA media.

There are are a variety of ways to tell.

(1) One very exact and pratically what professional use do is to measure the pressure exerted resistance by the HEPA filter when in use. When it is "blocked" or more correctly termed as useful lifespan reached, it would exert more pressure resistance.

(2) Another exact way is to weigh the filter. There is a specific grams of particulate matter a HEPA can hold. You will find this number as a spec for those cleanroom HEPA filter panels, eg 61cm x 61cm x 50mm panel can hold 60 grams.


(3) For the regular folks like us with home usage, what we can do is to get those anemometer measuring windspeed and do a wind velocity check during Day 1 usage and a few months after that.

Taobao got sell the wind anemometer devices, got few-in-one also termed as portable weather station.

(4) Use your hand to feel and execute some agaration.

Sniffing out the most common cause of allergies in Singapore

In the first comprehensive adult allergy cohort study in Singapore, researchers have found that dust mites are the primary cause of respiratory allergies in the island nation. These findings, which were published in the journal Allergy on 24 January 2014, were made by scientists and clinicians from NUS and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s (A*STAR) Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN). The results carry potential implications in the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis in tropical urban environments.

The new study, which was conducted on some 8,000 participants, revealed that close to 15% of Singapore’s adult population is affected by asthma and nearly 40% is troubled by allergic rhinitis. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that approximately 300 million people suffer from asthma worldwide and even more are affected by allergic rhinitis. Both conditions are now increasingly common in Southeast Asian populations.

“Given the increasing prevalence of airway allergic diseases in Singapore and Southeast Asian countries, this study is truly a breakthrough in understanding why there are such high numbers of allergic rhinitis patients in Singapore. Knowing the cause is the first step in developing more effective interventions to improve the quality of life for asthma and allergic rhinitis sufferers,” said Research Associate Professor Wang De Yun, from the Department Otolaryngology at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He co-led the study with Adjunct Associate Professor Olaf Rötzschke from NUS’ Department of Microbiology, who is also a Principal Investigator at SIgN.

Their findings address the widening problem of allergy and asthma in tropical countries. The results suggest that changes in lifestyle resulting in more time spent indoors increase our exposure to high loads of house dust mite allergens, which translates into a dominant cause of respiratory allergic diseases in Southeast Asia. With this knowledge, scientists can develop more effective allergen-specific desensitisation strategies as well as environmental interventions aiming at the reduction of the house dust mite load.

“Rather than relying on statistics from other countries, we have managed to pinpoint the cause of airway allergies in Singapore. We believe that results from this study will help to understand the differences of allergies in the tropics and other parts of the world,” said Assoc Prof Rötzschke.

“Knowledge of the allergic trigger, together with a nearly complete sensitisation of the local population provides the perfect basis for the future exploration of the molecular and genetic factors that ultimately determine if the response to an allergen progresses into an allergic syndrome,” he added.

Eighty-percent of those surveyed were reactive to house dust mites, and showed only a slight reactivity to 11 other common allergens that they were exposed to. Participants’ reactivity was measured via a skin-prick test or by measuring the level of allergy-associated Immunoglobulin E (IgE), a class of antibodies that is raised upon reaction to an allergen. The high rate of reactions from house dust mites are strongly correlated with increased rates of allergic rhinitis and asthma in Singapore.

The study further found that migrants from non-tropical countries had low sensitisation rates for house dust mites when they first arrived in Singapore, but these rates increased as they spent more time here. This increase was accompanied by an increase in airway allergies. Migrants from countries with climates similar to Singapore, such as Malaysia, showed comparable rates as Singaporeans, pointing again to house dust mites as the primary environmental cause.

It is just as what you all mentioned, the fan is loud for mid and high settings. It would be hard to sleep, kinda of sound like someone is using the hair-dryer.

For those who intent to purchase this from the Qoo10 site, do note that the price has increased again. It was $99/- with additional $15/$20 ($5/10 for colours, $10 for delivery). The current price is $115/- with additional $20/25 ($10/15 for colours, $10 for delivery). So need to do market research to see if there is any other good prices around.

It has been on for the past 30 mins, cant smell any difference.

Well, the highest speed of the Samsung AX40 is just a wee wee bit quieter than the Sharp A28's mid speed.

That means 323 m3/h is quieter than 108 m3/h.


The Sharp A28 does not have activated charcoal (which will lose effectiveness in about 4-8 week's time anyway). If outside is PSI 401, I assure you that you would smell a very big difference coz I have tried that before with the KC-840.
