it's decent for out of box and can probably settle for a mild overclock if your ambient is sub-singapore (*cough* aircon)

Agree. Could be a good upgrade for me when it arrives. To be honest, there is little need for anything more than 8 cores for now, at least for my personal usage.

I do feel that the 3800X may be one of the least desired chip in the stack considering that the 3700X is similar in specs and can potentially catch up with the 3800X with some overclocking. I feel most will either go for 3700X or jump straight to 3900X if they prefer the fastest chip.

No 16 cores

I suspect AMD pulled back on the 16 cores plan since Intel is unlikely to deliver anything substantial to challenge them for now. Intel's response is a 14nm++ 10 core Comet Lake, which is probably going to lag behind the Ryzen 2 chips if AMD really delivers on the IPC improvements. And for now, they are pushing the panic button by releasing a i9 9900KS advertised with an all core turbo at 5Ghz, which also likely means they are pushing the chip to its limit.

And once again, AMD is making the same mistake of creating products that overlap with its various market segments.

With the mainstream Ryzen going up to 12 or more cores, there's essentially no incentive for a HEDT builder to go with Threadripper unless he or she is targeting the extreme segment. Which means that AMD has no choice but to raise the minimum core count on future Threadrippers to at least16 cores with stock clock speeds of at least 3.5Ghz to 3.8GHz to avoid cannibalization from Ryzen.

The fact that both mainstream Ryzen and professional Threadripper accept ECC memory is another blunder. Who would go for Threadripper if they can get the same benefits from a Ryzen?

For better or for worse, Intel never allowed their mainstream, HEDT, professional workstation and server processors to overlap each other in features. The mainstream i3s to i7s never exceeded 8 cores, and the HEDT Extreme series never allowed ECC memory usage.

Popularity of the chips will be 3800x > 3600x > the rest. 3900x & 3700x are for niche users. 3700x pricing looks the best but its tdp of 65w will mean that under heavy core/thread loads it will only be in the 3ghz+ range when using Precision Boost for oc. However, if you oc manually then its similar to the 3800x. Reviews of 2700x vs 2700 will show that unless its different in the 3000+ series.

Ultimately need wait for reviews & benches from reputable sites.
