I have the same problem on mibox s though

For Mi Box S:
If you are not paying for Viu Premium, try to sideload the free tablet version. This is not officially supported.

If you are paying for Viu Premium, then you can cast from your mobile phone, this is the official method mentioned by Viu.

good morning,

look for a budget tv stick for my parent's old TV to watch youtube.

for the price range, is XIaomi TV Stick the best choice now?

or any other better choice to recommend?

mi tv stick is a good choice.

but you should not classify it as budget tv stick.

not many will object if you called it premium tv stick.

it will you best experience if you are only interested in FHD or 1080p .

you can run premium services like netflix, amazon prime, disney+, and also many others via chromecast.

ok.haha true on not classifying it as budget stick.

ya i think FHD/1080p is good enough, since its older TV that dosen't support anything higher than 720/1080p

yup. for now the best choice at the price point seems to be xiaomi tv stick :)

Total noob here. Been subscribing to ST and SH for 20-30 years and realise we watch mostly NHK world tv and taiwanese channels like TVBS Asia and CTI and some other international news channels. Not much into movies or dramas. Main interests are news, travel, food programmes especially around China, taiwan, japan regions. Have tried to read up on android box for most of today. As far as NHK world is concerned, it has an app on google play store does it mean getting an android box i can watch it on TV now?

Question is, should i get a box without preloaded apps like a Mi box S and install my own apps since my needs are quite basic (i guess for now) or should I get those preloaded ones like Ubox and Evpad which will probably open a brand new world for a suaku like me about the vast array of free contents out there?

With a box without preloaded apps I actually also have no clue what apps are out there and where to find them.

don't have to find, just go and visit facebook group - tv box (apps) - most of the good apps are there waiting for you.

plenty of free apps can show china program. most likely the apps installed is one of the free apps.

cloudtv at $100 per year is ok because it is harder to get live tv FOC.

Thank you, Greg. Just had a look at prices at shopee and qoo10, cheapest for Mi Box S i can find is $70.80. Just missed 12/12, now wait and see xmas got promo or not. Btw, some specifically mention global version, is this something i should look out for? Some also mention 4K or are all mi box s 4k anyway?

After reading through xiao fan’s guide on which box to get and particularly mi box s is highly recommended one reason being it has chromecast. I am noob, how crucial is this chromecast? My old LG TV even when i watch youtube on my ipad, i can cast it to this tv. Is there something I don’t understand? In fact, years ago, i bought a chromecast dongle, i end up not using it as my tv can receive cast without it.

So then my question is, do the other cheaper brand less box like the A95X F3 that does not have chromecast, they cannot receive cast from mobile or tablet?

Hope can enlighten me. Really blur.

It depends on the apps you use. Quite some important apps only support Chromecast and not DLNA Cast or MiraCast. Examples: Singtel Cast, SingTel TV Go, Starhub TV+, MeWatch, Viu Premium, Netflix, HBO Go, etc.

Then Apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video will only support 4K on the certified boxes like Mi Box S.

One more thing, certain apps like TVB Anywhere+ only supports Android TV OS based boxes.

Last but not least, Mi Box S Hardware quality is much better than no brand generic boxes.

BTW, the new Google Chromecast 2020 with Google TV is kind of a upgraded Mi Box S with better CPU, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. So you can consider it as a Mi Box S killer but the app ecosystem is the same.

But if you are not using the above apps and want to take chances on the hardware quality, then you can try A95 FX3. You can still use DLNA cast from phones for apps supporting DLNA. Or use iPhone to cast by installing AirPlay receiver apps like HappyCast which also supports DLNA cast.

Thanks for explaining, xiaofan. But I still don’t quite get it. aren’t those apps supposed to be installed in the box and thus render the chromecast irrelevant because you only use it if need to cast from phones or tablets?

Separately, even if i need to cast, i use iphones and ipads, are they compatible to chromecast? Or I should install Happycast instead?
