In the above CH8 report in Chinese, the lawyer is saying that streaming is not considered illegal in the current law in Singapore.

She raised two points for the challenges of the new proposed law, one is which box to ban since Starhub itself is selling an Android TV box, second thing is streaming which is still legal here and there are legitimate streaming service like YouTube.

One lawyer does not make the law.

The law is what the government says it is. Just like the ban on chewing gum.

The new law is being drafted. There is always an 'out' in the law like 'except as so exempted by the government'.

That should take care of YouTube and the SG licensed ISP.

No need to speculate now. Just wait loh.

You do not trust one lawyer but unless you are a lawyer what she says will carry more credibility than you.

In any case, the government file is already clear that it is targeting the seller and not the consumers.

The lawyer is commenting based on the proposed amendment.

Read it yourself if you are interested in this topic, then you will be able to give better comments, instead getting something off the air.

This is just a report and not the proposed amendment or even the draft new law.

Yes you are right. Must wait until the new law is out. Actually streaming is like you quickly look at a book without doing any thing else. What about M1 android TV box user?

Noob Questions

Dear all sifus... After reading this forum, seems like you are suggesting not to buy android tv boxes that comes pre-installed with channels.

My question is... which plain android tv box should I buy in Qoo10/Lazada? After buying the android tv box, which apps should I install to watch English/Indian/Sports/Malay channels? Are these apps based on yearly subscription? and where should I go to install the apps? If I do this (Buy empty android tv box and subscribe to apps), will it be considered illegal as well?

Thank you so much sifus!!!

It is not a good idea to install 'paid' tv service because normally these are run by unscrupulous sellers. One poor guy in the forum mentioned that his package went off-line 1 week after he paid and the seller claimed that the china governemt closed the link and he could not do anything.

By the way, android tv box is best use for VOD, and there are many free VOD app available.

Any one here considered/considering Amazon Fire TV? Can they be sideloaded?

Yes you can sideload apps on Amazon Fire TV devices.

In the Singapore context there are no much advantages compared to Mi Box S and in general the HW specifications are weaker.

Fire TV Stick 4k (better CPU) and Fire TV Cube (better connectivity, more memory) are the two device worth getting now.

Offer now: Fire TV Stick 4k at US$40 and Fire TV Cube at US$80.

Edit to add: HW specifications comparison, ignore the ranking in the following file though.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...g1YcoTxoERwROcYD-DU2sHjuC6o/edit?usp=drivesdk

Fire TV Stick 4k has faster CPU but less RAM at 1.5GB and storage of 8GB. Fire TV Cube is also 4k capable, has a weaker CPU, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. Fire TV Cube is also bundled with the 100M Ethernet adapter.

Details from Amazon

Was considering since there's prime video for amazon prime customers now in Singapore.

I'm more skewed towards getting an box with easily accessible contents.

Better to wait until the new law is finalised.

Read this as well if you are interested in Amazon Prime Video USA content. For Singapore content it is okay.
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/house-displays-226/amazon-fire-tv-5742706-2.html

For Netflix USA, VPN works fine even if you only have Netflix Singapore account as per the VPN thread.

Looks like Netflix is more suitable in Singapore. Anyway Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k and Fire Cube 4k support Netflix as well.
