Hi all, I wanted to find out more about minix T5 box, if it really does provide free access to channels and movies - is this true? I don't want the hassle to install any apps with many advertisements in order to watch channels/movies, as the device will be use by my older folks.

No free access to channels and movies. You have to install apps by yourself, free or paid.

Go to this thread if you want to buy preloaded box.

AC RYAN 4K ULTRA - Alternatives?

I was looking forward to upgrade my AC RYAN VEOLO 4K to ULTRA 4K but was told that they have discontinued the product and will never produce anymore Media Players.

That's devastating as I have loved AC RYAN's media players for more than a decade, with the recent models being able to support several types of video and audio files.

I have been looking at Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Is that a good alternative? If not, any other recommendations?

Thanks.

AC Ryan Ultra 4k box is a lousy box by the current standard. Actually it was not a good box in the very beginning.

Nvida Shield TV Pro will be way better. Just go for it. It is the best Android TV boxes money can buy.

It may be a bit overkill though. But I think you will not regret.

AC Ryan media players were good before the Android TV boxes days. Once going into the Android TV OS era (say with the release of first Nvidia Shield TV back in 2015), they were severely lagging behind.

All the major brands like Nvidia, Xiaomi, Minix, etc, produce better boxes than AC Ryan. Even less well known brands like Beelink and Mecool are also better.

many $15 android tv boxes from china are much better and powerful than AC RYAN VEOLO 4K and ULTRA 4K.

this company "produced" lousy box with cut-throat price.

...

same same but different, not the same ac ryan

ac ryan used to be a good company, however, it has financial difficulty and had to close down or sell the company. one of their former manager bought over and become today's ac ryan.

I see.

Now they seem to focus on Karaoke system by teaming with Popsical.

Seems to be popular from the Home Karaoke thread.

Thanks. I have always wanted to switch but am afraid these other brands from China can only do streaming and not able to play media files (most importantly, support Dolby.

AC RYAN has always been my preferred choice, but yes, I will certainly give Nvidia a try since I think my VEOLO 4K is dying...

Oh. I didn't know that. They have not been very forthcoming with their info on media players, and I had to probe further to find out they are giving up producing them. They are still making Ultra 4K available on various platforms although they have no more sets left.

I am sure these China sets are better, but can they play and support media file formats and support dolby? That's my worry.

Many of them will support Dolby Digital /DTS 5.1, for example Mi Box S (S$70-89) supports that. I am not saying Mi Box S is a good choice for you though as it lacks USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet.

Minix Neo T5 (S$99 from Shopee) is a good choice.

Even the cheap A95X F3 Air no brand box can do it, but better buy branded boxes.

But if you want to support Dolby Vision and lossless Dolby Audio, then you need higher end offerings. For example, Nvidia Shield TV Pro (and non Pro) 2019 version is able to support both Dolby Vision and Dolby lossless Audio as well as Dolby Atmos.

Thanks so much for your advice. I think the choice is clear!! :)

Oh wait. Does Nvidia support subtitles? I have not found any info on that online.

Cautions: if you connect it to internet, it will update its playstore and playservice. After the updates, the box will become very irresponsible/laggy, because it has only 1GB RAM which is insufficient to run latest google services.

To make it work again, uninstall the updates for google playstore and google playservice, then disable them. The box will become much faster.

Sorry for bumping up this old post but I just started using this box (got it free with my Philips TV) to watch shows.

I'm new to android box so how do I uninstall the updates for google playstore and google playservice and disable them?

I did connect my eternet to the box but not sure if anything was updated. But it was definitely laggy and some apps would be unresponsive.

basically, go to settings page and look for apps and system apps.

I have set up a facebook group specially for these boxes. Instructions are posted there. The name of the group is "Revitalizing 1GB RAM TV Boxes"

Excellent! Thanks for the guide. :s12:

It was pretty straightforward to follow even for a noob like me once you figured out the correct section to navigate.

I had done as you suggested so hopefully I will see some improvement in the box.

Live TV is tough, much tougher than VOD. Legitimate services may be limited.

So you have three ways.
1) Pay SingTel or Starhub and live with the limited channels.

2) to use UK VPN with the legitimate apps like BBC iPlayer for UK channels. Use Australia VPN for Australia channels. Use Japan VPN for Japanese channels (tough).

3) Pay for IPTV subscription or preloaded box. Not legitimate but popular. No guarantee of services and quality of services.

install apps like ywp player, DIYP.... you can load very stable and long life vjms links for japan channels.

for uk, usa, australia channels, there are many free apps, e.g swift streamz, mobdro, 10k tv .....

you can also import channel list into telezivo or tivimate. free channel list are easily available.

Hi,

Unfortunately I discovered this thread too late and bought a T95 Allwinner H616 box, anyone knows if I will encounter any heating issues if I use it only for streaming?

I am hoping it can last for at least 2 years honestly.
