for me I think he is trying to make a wireless bridge of the WiFi mesh since he mentioned lan contact.

edit: does some ap works that way as well?

not all access points works in wireless bridge mode. the protocol is different totally. when one is in Bridge mode wirelessly, that device will not broadcast wifi at all.

I'm kinda lost. I thought the wifi mesh is to extend coverage? So if i place the 2nd unit in my room will it be better?

no it doesn't work like what you wanted it to be.

the 2 units must be close enough to one another to form a wireless mesh. what you want to do is like using an access point, which is not the primary intention of WiFi mesh.

in another closed door event with singtel showcasing the WiFi mesh, there should be an upcoming WiFi mesh firmware update in which the nodes no longer require a "line of sight" but still able to form a mesh by using ethernet cable.. so far, as far as I know it's still in testing phase..

the update will be rolled out automatically to mesh users..

Remember wifi mesh is to extend coverage right? If you place a second unit in your room and your first unit is outside, likely the wifi signal is already degraded due to the walls and thus your speed will be slower.

Ideally, wifi mesh units should see each other in a line of sight, or be placed nearer to each other where the signal is still optimal.

Unless you are sure the signal in your room is optimal, if not it won't work as expected.

What you need is an access point, provided you have an ethernet jack in your room to provide you a connection for an access point.

If you die die want wifi mesh, then you have to place it outside your room where it communicates better to the first unit so that the 2nd unit actually extends wifi coverage.

Ohh ok understood. I think I have an ethernet jack, looks like a slot specifically for cables. What do I need to proceed on from here? Ps not very familiar with all the names. (i had to google access point and ethernet jack)

first of all, you might wanna consider how much you wanna fork out so that your wallet doesn't cry. secondly, decide what your usage will be like, e.g. any LAN devices require to access internet other than the wireless?

There are many access points out there ranging from around 100+ to 299 dollars. Of course, most wireless routers have access point mode built in, but they can be as costly as 500+ dollars. Honestly, there isn't much performance difference between an access point and a wireless router operating in access point mode.

Also, you might wanna take into consideration that some access points do not support LAN devices. While some better ones have 5-port LAN and can double up as a switch.

My impression of the wifi mesh is; 1 unit place beside modem and connect by cable, then the second unit will place my room to receive the wifi. So i can get a LAN cable and connect the second unit to my com to have "wired internet".

Hi rejuvienate

The first WiFi Mesh should be placed near your router and connected via LAN cable. Ideally it should be around slightly away from the router, roughly 1m distance. Hope this explains.

Can we use the iOS Airties Wifi App to control the Singtel Wifi Mesh?

I have not tested it before, but i think it is incompatible.

The last i tested the wifi mesh, it is running on singtel customised firmware. Therefore it might not be compatible to the app which is designed to run AirTies' firmware instead.

Yup. I tried and it can't connect to the app. I believe singtel customised firmware also disabled the guest wifi network?

Hi toyknight,

WiFi Mesh apps are still not compatible with our Mesh software yet. We are working to customize the apps and support it.

Hope this clarifies, thanks.

If I'm an existing singtel fibre broadband customer, can I get the WiFi Mesh devices? Will i need to recontract my existing plan?

So lets say I have an existing router, I will need to plug the first wifi mesh unit to my router. My subsequent mesh unit will now link via wireless to the first unit, and all will have the same SSID. Do i have to turn off my wireless broadcast on the router then? If i don't, then I assume there will really be 2 SSID. 1 from my router and 1 from the mesh unit?

yes your understanding is correct. its preferred to turn off your wifi on your router simply because the first unit and your router will be close and interference will occur. Moreover, one SSID is enough to have a seamless handover from one unit to another and that although your mesh is connected to router, your mesh does not hand over to the router's wifi.

You don't have to recontract to get it, you just need to sign up for it and it comes with a monthly subscription. If i'm not wrong, one-time purchase is no longer offered.

Hi kewl,

You can get the WiFi Mesh without re-contracting your current plan. A pair of WiFi Mesh units costs $10 per month over a 24-month period. It will be charged through your Singtel bills.

When using the WiFi Mesh units, we recommend that you turn off and switch off the router's WiFi for the optimal experience.

Can i pay it off in full instead of over 24 mths? I saw on the website that it will be $238 if paid in full.

Hi kewl,

The option to make a full payment is no longer available.

Based on customer feedback, the monthly installment option is preferred.

Therefore, we switched to monthly billing for easier communication.

Hope that clarifies.

Sitex promo. 1gbps ($59.90) + mesh (2 units, $10 monthly) and get 10 months free on 1gbps subscription.

Work out to be around $42/month. Not a bad deal there but wonder if it's only sitex exclusive or singtel shops offering the same. Online different promo mechanics.
