The ports can be used for pc without wifi or singtel tv. You can also plug any pc onto any of it to access the Web ui for configuration.

It's wifi based but also provides wifi to Lan connection. :D

Was looking at the air 4920 online manual & noticed there are two gigabit ports at the rear of each unit. This is gonna sound noob but what are they for?

Isnt it supposed to be wireless so why the need for gigabit ports on the device?

Hi All,

Need some expert advise...I was just given 2 Airties 4920. My house is wired up, meaning all rooms have 1 or 2 LAN port.

Can I use the 4920s and connect them into one of those ports at separate places to have better wireless coverage for the whole house?

Thanks.

In the future you can. But now no. Only 1 unit is connected to router and the satellite unit won't work with lan cable unless it's connected to pc or other lan devices.

Your first unit needs to be connected by lan. The second unit needs to be in the line of sight with the first unit. You can't expect full performance when you close your room door right?

Of course but im assuming its wifi performance is still better than just relying on the router alone for wifi signals or using wifi repeater rite? If not whats the point of using mesh?

Will having more wifi mesh units affect the performance like one unit in each room?

Well if u intend to use mesh, your router should have wifi disabled. It's not recommended to have both wifi source in a home.

The wifi performance is comparable to the ac1900 for example, but its not gonna be mind blowing if your 2 mesh units are not in the line of sight..

Hmm then thats gonna be a problem since there is no LOS once bedroom door is closed. Perhaps i should just stick to the Asus AC88 in living room as router & AC68 in my bedroom as repeater?

Only thing is when my ISP last set it up for me i think they didnt configue properly cos both routers ended up giving off different signals i.e. My phone detected the 2 different routers. I thought if the AC68 was set up as repeater it should be extending the AC88's signals? But instead it was transmitting its own signals.

Repeater will have a different ssid what. Where got set differently. You can't have both the same ssid because the phone will be confused. Whereas for mesh, you can have the same ssid because the mesh system will handover from a node to another..

But then how does it work in say my office? The place is huge so confirm there will be many repeaters but its the same SSID regardless of which part of office i go.

In office they don't use repeaters. They use access point with roaming assistant equivalent. Commercial access points have software to steer the devices into appropriate access points nearer to you or less congested.

If u do realise, you'll lose connection momentarily when your device is being handed over from one point to another.

Hmm never really noticed. So i guess singtel mesh would be the way to go but hopefully the performance will be reasonable even without LOS as i can imagine almost everyone sleeps in an aircon room with door closed.

Have not bought the SingTel Mesh yet but I've some questions.

I usually off my router when I go to bed but leave the ONT on.

If I turned on the SingTel Mesh the next day, how long does it take to connect between the 2 units? Must I press the WPS again for both units to connect?

I read from the online manual that it may take up to 3 mins to start up the unit and another 5 mins for both the units to talk to each other after I pressed the WPS button.

Can someone please enlighten me. Thanks.

The initial pairing will take some time. But subsequent association won't take more than 2 minster I guess. Didn't really time in.

Btw whether it's 2 or 3 mins, won't affect your life right? Your router needs time to boot up as well..

Yah lah, 2 - 3 mins no problem since my Asus also take this long to startup but if every time I must do the 5 mins WPS thingy when I switched off then it's a chore :D

Someone selling new unopened set on Carousell for $180, so I hoot already.

no need to keep pairing wps. out of the box the 2 units are already associated with each other and all u need to do is to set it up and subsequently after every reboot, it will automatically link with each other.

the link speed will also dependent on how far the units are apart...
