Hey guys, just got my offer letter from UQ. Would be doing international hotel n tourism management at St. Lucia this july. Any recommendations for accommodation? What do you guys think of on-campus ones such as international house or cromwell? As for off-campus, anyone's got a spare room or would like to share a place?

Any help would be much appreciated!
International house is situated just next to cromwell college. I've seen and walked around these two colleges. Nice place to study during the day. Peaceful, quiet. BUT when all the students return to their respective colleges at night, you can definitely hear party music blasting not too far away, especially around international house.

Don't really know of anyone going back this july or wanting to share a room. Will update you if I've heard of any vacancies. Cheers

heys try the real estate website given in UQ web, that day i saw one with 6bedrooms! =)
I search the UQ website before and some are quite good but I just want to look for more alternatives before I make my decision. My friend and I are planning to look for accomodation when we reach there if the off campus provided in the UQ website is not available. So, is it recommanded to do so?And is it difficult to look for an accomodation if we start looking when we are in Brisbane?

According to doinker07, it is easy for me to look for a place near Uni with 140pw.So, will I be too late if I start searching accomodation in July? And from where do I get the information that there is a vacancy in their unit?Thx :s22:

personally if i were you, i will arrive in brisbane 2-3weeks before uni starts, rent a temp accom and start your search for a perm place only when you are here. there is no point searching through the net and deciding which one to apply. the reasons being, they might not even entertain your email or their listing is not updated, also its better that you physically have a look at the condition of the place. dun expect too much for your 1st accom, cos those value for $ units have already been taken up way before you arrive.

Was actually thinking of starting off at International House. It is ex, definitely so, and lotsa parties too (I heard), which is good and bad. But the thing is I'll not have to worry bout accomodation before I get to oz and at least for the first sem. But it seems that international house seldom has vacancies? and cromwell college gives me the impression that it's predominantly for ang mohs.

Can anyone advice me on this?

International house and cromwell college are jus beside one another. To me, it doesnt make much of a difference. No, Cromwell college has a substanial number of asian students, including singaporeans. Colleges like St.Leo, Woman's, King's Emmanuel have more Aussie students, based on the fact that I walk past these few colleges everyday. Very rare to see Asians in the above mentioned colleges.

Union, Cromwell colleges are slightly more popular with asians.

If you are coming alone with no friends with you, it might be viable to opt for a college in the 1st sem, as what you suggested.

Hope this helps

Do not stay in Cromwell. It absolutely sucks. I stayed there for one semester and left. Substantial amount of Asians, not sure when that happened, but there has never been a substantial amount. Unless maybe you're talking about the jarvis tower or the other one. I wouldn't suggest staying in cromwell college, you're better off living in their self catered units.

From what i know, cromwell dun have a lot of asians.
Most are in IH or Union college.
Campus Lodge(under cromwell mangement) is a very good choice. Its a bit pricy, but good environment.
I have heard of people who stayed there for their entire 4 yrs of study.
CL is also self catered. Meaning no food provided. If can, choose those 4 rooms unit, so have more friends, rather than a 2 room unit..

The Manors? Ha. Yet another person staying there? I've passed by the place, viewed the apartment before since i've mates staying there, adequately sized, pretty good security, a swimming pool which i've heard has a drowned victim before, BUT definitely overpriced for me. Personal opinion. How much is it for a week? A$180 a week i suppose? I would say it as overpriced since I'm staying at a place for A$95 dollars a week and having a room bigger than the one offered at Manors.

Security sucks there. There had been 1 case of a car being stolen from the "secured" underground garage and the famous case of 10 units facing SFS Drive being blugarized on the same day in a 2hr span in 2001/02.

The drowning @ the pool took place the in spring of 04, on the friday after the end of mid-sem break. She's from M'sia and drowned on her last sem... Yes... the very last sem she was supposed to grad. Her hsemate is my best mate. I was there when it happened.

IMHO, it's near to uni if u wanna save on transport cost, but it's definitely a rip off.

The managers, David & Fiona are true *****... Very the lao kan type. Just beware.

I used to stay @ Unit 36. The unit facing the wooden bridge with the big balcony.

I had a catback/exhaust mod a few yrs back to increase performance. Within 2 days, I got 1 warning letter abt me loud car.

I used to have monthly bbq @ my place & all my friends park their cars in the visitor car park. I had warning letters again for their loud exhaust/music system and prohibits them from parking in manors. So they parked outside the office of Fiona and do burnouts & doughnuts while leaving... She can't do a thing abt cars parked on the road.

She would do unit inspection on grounds of checking the blah blah blah thing and check on yr kitchen, toilet, rooms and everything. I had my spare engine oil and some car washing stuffs in a box @ my allocated parking space and she told me I had to remove them as the space is for car only.

After stayin for 1 yr, ya have load of stuffs in the house. She complaint that my carpet was dirty and I must get a carpet cleaner to clean. I had to shift all the bed, chairs, tables and whatever crap I have into the balcony so that the cleaner can clean. And this is not the clean the unit @ the end of lease.

The previous manager is way much better than Fiona. I would get him a btl of wine everytime I came back from Sg and he would take care of my unit while I was away.
