Opinions on Yamaha 5.1 Home Theater System

Hi folks,

I am currently looking to build up a 5.1 home theater system. The setup is Yamaha RX-A810 AV receiver, Yamaha NS-555 speakers, Yamaha YST-SW315 Subwoofer and 3 other small Yamaha speakers (one center and two rear, can't remember the exact model). Do you think the setup is ok?

I was told that there is no speaker wire that comes with the set, can anyone tell me which wire is suitable and affordable for this setup. Thanks.

For 5.1 home theater setup, u can actually mixed and match the speakers with the yamaha AVR. If u like yamaha AVR, u can consider going down to b&w showroom at the lavender street (the expert group).

There are also other AVR brands u can consider like onkyo and denon. I owned onkyo 818 AVR and i don't use onkyo speaker ,instead i paired it up with monitor audio speakers and rythmik subwoofer after going thru the audition and listen to the setup.Each has their own taste and the best is listen and decide by yourself.That is after a intense 2 months research and gather the information on the internet and buying a home theater.

For speaker connection, there are a few ways for connection like using banana plugs, spade or even bare wire. I am using belden 1313 for front 3 speaker and QED micro wire for surround speaker, belden cost $7 per meter and QED micro about $4 per metre

Thank you for the recommendation, I already purchased the whole set at $1699. This set is a demo set but only unboxed one month ago, so still very new. Don't know whether the deal is good or not. After purchased the set, what bother me is how to locate the two rear speakers. I don't want to run the wire on the floor or wall as it is quite ugly, would it be alright to put at the front (on tv console)? Or is there way to arrange the rear speakers so that the wires are not obvious?

As for speaker wires, I find the two models you recommended are value-for-money. Do you think I can get such price for cables in Sim Lim Square/Sim Lim Tower?

U can consider QED 79 for the front 3 speaker , much cheaper than belden 1313a .

Yes , front 3 is refer to left right centre speaker, usually it is recommand to use the same speaker wire for the front 3 and that included the length too. I believe QED 79 cost less than $5 per metre.For speaker wire , get a decent one will do and no need to go for those gold plated banana plug connection.
Not so sure about comparing my belden to the QED but I believe should have no problem driving your speakers .

Surround speaker is design to place on the side ( slightly behind the listener) or rear . If u placed on the front , u may not feel the planes or bullets flying over you for movies. I ran those stick on type trunking to conceal my surround speaker wire in run along side the wall skid on then up to the top wall . The trunking is ok for me and my wife but if your home is newly renovated , then i understand hard to accept.

When I setting up a home theater , I thought $3k is enough because home theater in a box like sony , samsung are usually cost less than $1k and I assumed $3k home theater will be 3 times better and in the end I was wrong and realized that the sound that I can accept cost $6k in total .

Thanks nomoney25 for your useful suggestion. My house is newly renovated therefore it is hard for my wife to accept the trunking. My thinking is that I will buy longer cables for rear speakers. For music listening I will place the rear speakers at the front whereas for movie I will place the rear speaker behind my sofa which is about 4.3 meter from my tv console. Do you think this is workable?

I am not an audiophile therefore I think $1.7k set is considered very good to me. Your >$6k set must be super duper powerful.

Another question that I want to ask is that how do you avoid the disturbance to the neighbors when the speaker volume is high? Although I stay in point block, but my house is only 4-room HDB. Worry my neighbors will complain.

I am not a audiophile also ..actually I consider a newbie too.
Don't u think it is quite troublesome to move your speaker rear to front and rear again ? After awhile , u will just accept the position of the speaker .

Those who like to conceal surround speakers wire in living room will likely go into false ceiling and since your home Reno is already done , then don't waste money to run the wire inside false ceiling . Unless u don't have false ceiling , then that is clear cut solution to conceal wire by having false ceiling . Also , there are some who has a delicated home theater system in bedroom . Quite straight forward and less headache but being a smaller room , needed some room treatment for speaker to breathe ..

As for your last question.. Haha .. I pity my neighbor .. I try to play loud action movies only on fri or sat night and close my windows and turn on aircon in living room .

And would like to Know first if there is a firmware update avalable and if so were can i get it.

and secound when i plug my iphone into the USB port it starts to load but as soon as it starts to charge the system cuts out

any ideas or info please would be very welcome

TSX-112 and TSX-140 key difference is :
1. Made for iPhone Certification[TSX-112]
2. USB Sync Direct [TSX-140]

While the rest would be mainly Audio Performance vs Design.
Some prefers shorter depth, some would choose MCR-040 for the sound quality.

I just bought a rx-v473 amp (firmware 1.09).

- Is it known that usb-ipad (ios5) music play has hanging issue?

i believe particularly so when doing quite a few of songs navigations while playing those songs with chinese wordings titles. It slows down, lags till finally the playing hangs / breaks constantly in a song.

normally i would set the volume @ 40.
but now or even sometimes, i have to bring down to like 20 or 25.

is there any setting i need to do?

I have not configure the amp yet.

is there anything you can help me with??

I am thinking of getting a Yamaha YHT-S401 for my home, but would like to be able to play my songs from iTunes on my laptop. As such, I am wondering if there is any way that i would be able to connect it to my home wifi network?

If not, do you guys have any suggestion on any other sound bars that can do the trick?

The best solution is to get an apple tv to equip with your YHTS401. You could access to all your apple device via AirPlay as well as itunes too.
