Dear all, it’s Christmas Eve and my Xiaomi AX3600 decided to go kaput on me.

Is GT-AX11000 or TP-Link HB710 a good replacement for my router?

I stay in the old HDB 4 rm flat layout so I hope the router is able to maximise the coverage in the house.

If it helps I’m still using Huawei’s ancient HG8240H ONT and I’m on M1 500mbps broadband plan (probably going to upgrade nxt year upon contract expiry)

Xiaomi AX3600 China version (or International version with Chinese FW) has very good coverage. If you intend to use single HB710 the coverage may not be as good. Two units may be a good choice.

GT-AX11000 may not be a good choice if you want to be a bit future proof -- GT-AX6000 (dual 2.5G ports) or GT-AX11000 Pro (one 10G port and one 2.5G port) may be a better choice.

Is there a way to make old routers act as switch? I have an ax88u which i dont want to make an access point coz for some reason if i mesh or access point and disable the radio, seems like the rest of the radios in primary and other nodes are impacted. Nonetheless why question is can old routers be configured to act as managed/unmanaged switch?

Run in AP mode and disable WiFi, then it can function as an unmanaged switch.

RT-AX88U does not support VLAN function on the LAN side (only higher end Asus routers like GT-AX6000, RT-AX88U Pro and RT-AX86U Pro have VLAN function on the LAN side).

For old routers which support OpenWRT, it is possible to configure it as a managed switch but the performance may be limited. Anyway, RT-AX88U does not support OpenWRT.

So it is not possible to use RT-AX88U as a managed switch.

Thanks for the quick reply! Unfortunately I don’t think I can shell out money for 2 mesh units.

Is there any alternative that rivals Xiaomi AX3600 in terms of transmission coverage? Apologies if it doesn’t relate under the forum topic.

I’m having good coverage with TP Link Archer BE230. 2.5Gbps ports WiFi 7 up to 2Gbps WiFi speed. Can mesh. People are selling on Carousell BNIB for $100

Hi xiaofan is this a gd plan.

Wrong thread.

Please check out SingTel 1Gbps thread if you are looking at SingTel offering.

If you are okay with other ISP, then look at the Singapore ISP comparison thread. Starhub 5Gbps at S$29.55 per month special offer is a good one to look at.

2. Note: Asus China version vs Local version
They are basically the same HW and same FW, just different country code. The country code can not be changed as it is outside of the FW area. The country code will decide the minor differences in the behaviours.

Major difference:
Local version has three years HW warranty. China version will have no local warranty.

Minor differences in terms of FW behaviors:
1) China version has Chinese/English Web UI
2) China version may have specific game accelerator (网易 UU 加速器), just ignore it.
3) China version may ping Baidu for web monitoring but you can change the behavior.
4) Some China version routers may have special Web UI skins like Asus TX-AX6000, which is a bit different from local version TUF-AX6000.
5) China version has wireless region default to China, but you can change to Asia region to be compliant to local regulation.
6) Some reports say that Asus Instant Guard VPN may not work with Asus China routers.

How to change #3 and #5?

Example from Asus RT-AX86U China version.

#3: Administration --> System

You can change the Resolve Hostname to the host you like, for example, www.google.com. Default is Baidu.

The default ping target is also Baidu, but you can change to the target you like, for example, Google DNS 8.8.8.8.

#5: Wireless --> Professional

hi @xiaofan
i saw these 2 models BE86U and BE92U. But the price difference between the 2 is huge where BE92U is cheaper. Looking at the specs, 92U and 86U like a same with 92U having the 6ghz operating frequency. ram seems to be the same too... any thoughts ?

you just need to decide between faster 5ghz or sacrifice it for 6ghz

BE92u has lesser CPU power (if not mistaken), and lesser antennae on 5GHz band. If you are not a power user and not much devices in your network, I believe BE92U should be sufficient.

For Asus WiFi 6E and WiFi 7 router discussions, please go to the following thread.

I do not recommend RT-BE92U myself due to lower end CPU and lower end 2x2 WiFi spec. You can take a look at my view here.

Give them a call, might need to activate the modem MAC from their end

thanks! i got it sorted by calling them but later realized this router doesn't have a 2.5g out. so my 2.5g mobo compatible is still capped by its 1gb lan ports. LMA0oO0

Hi all,

I am looking for a ASUS router recommendation to be placed in my db box and I have a pair of ASUS ZenWifi XD6 which will act as APs in my Living Rooms & MBR.

Further information is that I will contract with M1 HomePac 1Gbps plan.

With the above information, I hope it is sufficient for kind souls here to recommend a Asus router to be place in my db box.

TIA!

Asus TUF-AX4200 will do. Of course you can get better ones like Asus TUF-AX6000 (or cheaper Chinese version called TX-AX6000) with dual 2.5G ports to be a bit future proof just in case M1 upgrade 1Gbps users to 2.5Gbps for free.

Hi Xiaofan,

thank you for the recommendation, I will most likely get the TX-AX6000 from TB.

Anything I should note from getting a router from china? Like will I be able to change the language to english etc?
