Run a 290 ref and a 290 TF/DC2 BF4 side by side and tell me if you still prefer the 290 helipad

As I have said, the 290 ref card is actually very quiet due to the profiles used. What AMD did is to throttle the card when it hit 95C instead of bringing up fan speed to noisy level.

If you don't mind the throttling of the card, its perfectly fine. Of course, you can manually alter the fan speed to a level that you do not consider noisy. For me, no more than 55%.

Yup, and that's where the uber mode (lame) thingy comes in. Originally, the majority of the reference cards' fan speed are limited to max 40% (or 42% to be precise). It started from the HD5000 series. With the driver update, that value goes to 47% for the R9 290, which then the loudness increased "logarithmically".

Lol....I too find it lame..... But I like ref cards because of the water blocks available for it!!

Fair case in point, but kinda defeats the purpose of not being able to run stock performance.

been so busy over the weekend, that i've yet to install the card yet.

however, here's some pics for it.

3 years warranty by Avertek

pretty standard affair dated back to the GT88 series, or is it longer?

Reference cards are usually no frill cards too.

standard 6pin and 8pin for power

HDMI, Dual DVI, and display ports..

yes. is a purely AMD reference card..

all in all, for 428, or 408, i think this card feel pretty good from the surface. Lemme see if i can some stress tests going on to run it in and share the temps here.

Think gonna set fan control first to prevent throttle.

Not really. Noise not really an issue for me.
So no point spending $100+ or $71+ just for a better cooler when I get can the same performance.

Well, u need to test out to know whether can get same performance or not...

Ignoring noise levels, if ur card can handle its heat well, then it can go far.
Otherwise, the heat will bottleneck ur performance.

The performance is not really the same.

Stock cooler if with the Power tune by amd to set your fan speed curve, you might not be able to get the performance out from the non ref card cooler instead.

You may oc it, but the heatsink on a ref card cannot handle the heat output well.

The cooler your card is the better the card performs.
