Beautiful backdrop (lakes, mountains, horizon), cold dark night + clear skies + uncertainty + sudden appearance of Aurora + Excitement = priceless experience.:)

The peace and quiet, the sounds of the coyotes in the distance, the moment of gratitude, the thoughts of the cosmos and its vastness, that how small we are in the grand scheme of the universe, all that stuff which we don't usually think about in our everyday pursuit of the mundane

how much to budget for such trip?
if you go with the sole itinerary of seeing Northern light, its not too expensive. most people find it expensive because they want to do lots of stuff there and that would be costly

According to my wife, for my 3 week trip, it will cost us about $5,500 - $6,000 per person (airfare, internal flight x 1, train, bus, ferry, twin sharing and some excursions). Excludes food which I allow $2,000 (about $90 per day)

Mine was 3.8K/pax but with 5nights free lodging at Amsterdam. If need to pay for lodging there, I think need to add another 600 to 700 more. Itin as below

Sin to Amsterdam by air
Amsterdam to Brussel by bus
Brussel to Brugge by train
Brussel to Tromso by plane
Tromso to Bergen by plane
Bergen to Flam by ferry
Flam to Oslo by train
Oslo to Sin by plane

daily excursion done within 24hrs passes, did one night of NL chase tour. The rest all on our own.

Anyone knows what is the ballpark for a 10D self-driving trip to Iceland to see northern lights? Im also torn between Iceland and Norway, since Tromso is super low fail rate.

Which part of Norway are you visiting this time?
I will be going to Tromso, Lofoten Islands, Trondheim and Oslo. The first two locations are repeat visits.
Outside Norway will include Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Rovaniemi (Santa Claus Village), among other place.

I checked - there will be plenty of snow. Will be a challenge.

It will depends on your airfare - we got ours for about $1K round trip. Now it will cost $1,800. China Southern can give a better deal since it flies through Russian airspace, saving 2 hours (disregarding the stopover time)

Average around 3.5-5k per pax for iceland 10D self drive. If your main is to see northern light then better go Norway.
