AX router recommendations?

New BTO and intending to get M1's GT Ax6000 for own use.

Question: if the ONT is in the DB box (left wall of main door), can I simply plug a cheap TPlink AX72 with the ONT so that all wall sockets in the house have access to wired connections and then at Bedroom 3 (study room, half-hacked glass wall facing living rm) I place the GT AX6000 to act as my main router covering the entire house.

Is this an optimal plan? Any improvement suggestions? Thank you.

You may want to get another Asus router instead of the TP link in your DB, at least can AIMesh and provide additional range of wifi to the kitchen and living room. Then your GT AX6000 can move to Bedroom 2 to get better coverage of main bedroom and toilets.

Possible consideration is the Asus AX55, can get for $70 or less on carousell if you haggle a bit.

Personally I would put the AX55 in the DB if no choice, if can put it outside of the DB or on top of the DB would be better. DB may reduce the range of the router quite a bit when router is inside and closed off. AX6000 has more antennas and have stronger signals, so put in bedroom to provide the best coverage. You trying to provide coverage inside of your house, not to your neighbours, so why put the stronger one at the DB

Although some others may suggest that the main router in the DB should be the one with the strongest CPU, which would be the AX6000. But I think as long as decent router and CPU in the DB is enough.

If need more wired connections to other LAN ports in house, get a cheap 5 port or 8 port switch, put it in your DB and wire up the patch panel accordingly if you have one in the DB.

Note: Do not get DLINK or NETGear switches, known to have some weird issues because of protocol handling of the ethernet packets.

Example:
ONT > Asus AX55 (3 wired output to other rooms, 1 to the AX6000).

ONT > Asus AX55 (2 direct to other rooms, 1 to AX6000, 1 to switch which breaks out to another 4 rooms).

Best to have wired backhaul for the Asus AIMesh.

Floor plan please with details of the location of the ONT and the intended location of the main wireless router. I assume you are going to stick with M1, right? Where is the cupboard located? Does the cupboard has the glass door?

It could be that none of the above is good enough and you have to use triband mesh solution like Asus ZenWiFi XT8 dual pack (not cheap). Or if you requirement is a bit lower, maybe RT-AX55 + Asus ZenWifi XD6S dual pack may be an option, depending on your floor plan and placement.

You want to set up ax6000 as AiMesh or AP ?

If aimesh, add to ax55 via webgui or app AiMesh menu, connect to WAN port
if AP, configure ax6000 in AP mode, any router features including DHCP will automatically disabled, connect to WAN port

coverage is good throughout the house just need more LAN ports so should i:
ONT > RT-AC1200 > mini XD4 > switch (would need to buy 2 units)

or unbox AX55 and setup as this:
ONE > RT-AC1200 > AX55 (living room) + XD4 > switch (bedroom)

yes, correct. tv and ps5 in bedroom. tv, android box and nintendo switch in living room. wifi is alright but the mini xd4 only has 1 LAN port on it.

I see... you should have gotten xd6 or xt8 that comes 3 lan port instead. If you are not planning on upgrading xd4 anytime soon, adding a switch to both will be simplest option.

It is not worth buying RT-AX88U now as it is the first AX routers from Asus and it is less stable than the later versions like RT-AX86U (both in terms of HW quality and FW stability). It is better to buy RT-AX86U (which is cheaper but better than RT-AX88U other than the LAN ports quantity) or RT-AX86U Pro and then add a cheap 5-port switch. RT-AX88U Pro is another good choice but the price may be on the higher side now.

As for Asus AX routers from Taobao, they work out of the box in Singapore, no need special version, just buy the default version with official Asus FW. You just need to switch the language from Chinese to English and the wireless region from China to Asia.

Basically the China version is the same as Singapore version in terms of HW and FW, but the country code is different which causes minor behavior differences but that should affect normal operation. Of course you lose the three years local HW warrantty. So there are risks associated with shipment and HW quality issues. This is especially true if you buy the RT-AX88U.

Which AX3000P? Asus RT-AX3000P? I think it is not available in Singapore and it is inferior to Asus RT-AX58U and RT-AX3000 (256MB RAM and no USB port). So to me it is not worth buying if you intend to use it as the main router. But if just want to use as an AImesh node, then it should be okay as it is an upgrade from RT-AX55.

Go for RT-AX56U or RT-AX58U then. Put it in the DB box. Then use the free RT-AX3000P and existing XD6 as the mesh node.

I see. I thought you would like to recontract with M1 and then get the free RT-AX3000P.

But yes you can go with RT-AX58U + XD6 first to see if it is good enough or not.
