Thanks so much, Lyn. All that is good to know before I take the plunge,if i do! Anyway i tried hotspot shield last night, worked like a charm, but i had to disable my safesurf at home to get it. Now i wonder if i now can buy music downloads off Amazon? will try tonight. I wish though that b&N would make the file format of their ebooks more explicit. I was trying to look for that - I had a sense the books wouldnt read in Sony reader, but i was trying to ascertain the specific format. Now after having bought one book - I know for sure- pdb! i wish too that they'd give a choice of file format like booksonboard. the more open the better!

@Jenny: FYI, these are the lists of the Newspapers in B&N Store of our Nook..

The New York Times
The Wall Street Journal
The Washington Post
The Los Angeles Times
The Financial Times
The Chicago Tribune
The Denver Post
The Dallas Morning Post
The Washington Tmes
The San Jose Morning News
The Columbus Despatch
The New York Observer
The Star Tribune (Minnepolis)
The International Herald Tribune

In which, can be seen like shown here (or barely be seen):-

http://i47.tinypic.com/2pt9h85.jpg
http://i50.tinypic.com/x3rzs.jpg

The touch-screen shows the coverpage of all listed Newspapers in colours too:

http://i49.tinypic.com/35lgdud.jpg

So assumingly... I choose 'The International Herald Tribune'

http://i47.tinypic.com/auw7ro.jpg

The touch-screen panel will give me a choice between
'Buy Issue for $0.99' or 'Subscribe for $9.99'

http://i45.tinypic.com/2dhw85w.jpg

Assumingly, if I subscribe - Then, I believe I can simply go to
the 'My Daily' in the Home screen of the touch-screen and my subscribed
Newspaper/(s) will automatically be shown there for me to read...

Sorry again for my phone's incapabilities of taking sharp focus on close-up pics ;)

Hi All,

My friend's siter flew in yesterday with a surprise - brand new nook for my friend..! Was helping him set up the account and stuff thanks to guidance from you guys..!

Maybe just a few things to add:

1) The books are in an ePub format. B&N now have readers for PC, Mac, iPhone & Blackberry. From the purchased ebook we tried last night, to get it to play on either these devices, you simply need to input the name of the purchaser (as stated on the card) and the credit card number for the passcode. That should unlock the DRM and let you read it.

This works as well if you side load the purchased ebook. (Load it via usb mass storage mode) The ebook will turn up in My Documents of the nook and when you try to open it, it will ask you for the credentials as well. (This may be a loophole in ebook sharing - I have not tried this on multiple devices or tried to load the book again after restarting it).

2) The nook couldnt sync the B&N Library out of the box, after adding our wifi password. I think the problem was that it was having issues with our WPA2 encrypted wifi. Later decided to update the firmware and everything worked like a charm. Lesson: always update the firmware first before doing anything.

Haven't had much more chance to play around with the device since it's my friend's but hopefully i will save enough to get mine soon :D

On a side note, do you guys have the screen protector already? If not, would you be interested to share the shipping and order a few over? :)

Critical info regarding the Dictionary in Nook

On my initial thread in regards to the usage of Dictionary in My Documents:

I just tried minutes ago, to download an eBook of (ePub format) directly to
'My Documents' via USB.

The Dictionary works:D

http://i48.tinypic.com/f02nm1.jpg

But of course, the built-in M&W Dictionary still doesn't work for PDFs in
'My Documents'

@Jenny: On the brighter-side, this is really good for you to know..-
as you said, you usually download ePUB format for yourr ebooks, no? ;)

I have a qn - sorry it may sound rather dumb, but since the wifi for nook is really just to browse bn bookstore, is it poss then to install hotspot shield on the device so you can make purchase directly? or do you purchase thru pc, and so device must be tethered to pc?

as of this time, its not possible to install a VPN application on the nook. another way around this is to use a US proxy server but unfortunately, the nook does not support wifi that uses proxy servers as well.

after purchasing the books on the hotspot shield enabled pc, you can download your updated B&N library into the nook using any wifi. You will be able to download already purchased ebooks into your nook via wifi without the need to plug it to the pc.

Backboy: Yep. In B&N, there's one super-cool function called, 'Lend me'.
You can lend your eBooks to peeps in your 'Contacts' and vice versa. :D

FAQ from B&N on feature - LendMe

Q: Can I lend eBooks from my nook?

Yes. With our new LendMe™ technology, you can now share from nook to nook. All you need to know is your friend's email address. You can lend many of your eBooks one time for 14 days. When you use our LendMe™ technology, you will not be able to read your eBook while it is on loan, but you always get it back.

Q. How does LendMe™ work?

Lending offers on a wide selection of eBooks can be sent from the nook to any email address. You will see a LendMe™ icon alongside books in your library that are lendable.

To determine if an eBook is lendable before you buy it, please visit BN.com and search for the eBook there. The LendMe™ flag is not yet visible in the nook store, but will be soon.

A lending offer, which shows up in the daily on the recipient's nook or their email account if they do not own a nook, is available for 7 days and can be accepted or declined on a nook or online. All lendable titles can be lent once for 14 days. Once a lending offer is submitted, it cannot be retracted.

Q. How do I lend eBooks from my nook?

With our new LendMe™ technology, you can lend many of your eBooks one time for a maximum of 14 days. In your nook's library, select View Item and Details of an eBook and tap Lend. Then you either select a friend you have already defined on your nook, or create a new contact. You can also enter a personal message. Once done, tap Submit and then Confirm to have your lend offer emailed to your friend. If your friend already has the book on their nook, the offer will not go through, so you can lend the book to another friend.

Q. Does a friend have to have a nook to enjoy a LendMe™ eBook?

No. A friend who wishes to read a book you share via LendMe™ can enjoy the book on a number of smartphones, PC or Mac if they use free B&N eReader software.

p/s: Not too bad, then. Considering the fact - it's not stricted to only within Nook owners:D

Hi - well this is strange and disappointing. After installing hotspot shield, lsat night the ebook i bought worked. But maybe it was out of copyright, a sherlock holmes collection. today i tried twice, once for the Paulson book and a second time for cheap book - and both times rejected with reminder that only purchases from US and Canada allowed. O well, I guess there is no need anyway to buy from bn. Does anyone have any suggestions?
But anyway I went ahead to order Nook bec actually I have a lot of ebooks. So far, it doesnt seem to be rejected - at least not yet! So let's see. I guess maybe they allow hardware purchase but not ebooks.

just wondering u ordered nook via which channel cos from what i know b&n does not allow overseas customers to purchase directly from them...weird that u encountered this kind of problem with ebook from b&n cos so far i did not have this kind of problems using hotspot shield.

Hi - Ok this is v experimental. I placed the nook order last night- used my posb card with US billing. and instructed to ship to vpost. So far not rejected. This morning the order status seemed ok- it said your order is due to ship! So far so good...
