whoaa seems that the lady has sold off her nook already. i still saw her ebay posting last week...

I think I was the one who bought her last nook :) The reflective screen on my Sony PRS 600 finally bothered me enough to sell it off and get the nook instead. Was going back and forth between the nook and the kindle 2 (a shop in Sim Lim apparently sells the kindle 2 but I didn't get a quote from them) but finally decided on the nook as I don't really like the keyboard/pad on the kindle... don't see the need and I had an iriver before (which I also sold), so...

I'm now waiting for the cover that I purchased from B&N to arrive, been reading more on my nook in the past few days than I have in the past couple of months that I owned the PRS 600.

In regards to softrooting our Nook..Have to admit, I was tempted too..

BUT good points to ponder:-
- Yes, sure..IF ONLY we reside in the USA and in which, if anything goes wrong - to get a new unit of Nook is within our reach..But hey, IT OBVIOUSLY IS NOT - for us all here in Singapore...Also, do bear this in mind: It’s not an easy job since you have to take apart the nook first, and you must have knowledge how to execute commands on a linux machine. YOU will be liable for any damage to nook in the process of rooting, and not B&N.. Don't even think of sending back your Nook for a replacement and/or repair direct to B&N if anything goes wrong in the process of softrooting or after your softrooted. B&N will definitely be laughing at you, and say, "You mess up with our system, and now you want us to fix it or give you a replacement to a unit of Nook? You must be nuts on the head! haha"

- Even Nookdevs (the guys who founded the Nook softroot) were kind enough to advise and strongly advise us all, in short:- If no confidence, don't even think about doing it to your Nook!. Read thoroughly at what these guys have to say...http://nookdevs.com/Softroot

the back cover of nook is very easy to take out as i did before to remove that 3g sim card inside as i hated that 3g signal pic whenever i turned on my nook...

Ok - Finally got my Nook yest, and played with it last night. Had a frustrated moment when with wifi on, i couldn't register until i realised oh, gotta do firmware update first - duh..
Here are my thoughts:
Like: screen clarity is excellent. Think it's better than my current sony 300. I like that you can change font. I chose helvetica bec it seemed bolder and seemed to enhance clarity.
- wifi download of books in b&n library is great. Made me move 2 books out of my Sony cart into b&n!
- great to have time indicator
- i think books reflow much better than Sony. Reading Dracula, for instance. It was a free book from Fictionwise. on Sony at small font, the book had these huge margins on side, and text became too small to be readable. but on Nook small font, it was good; text reflowed almost to the margins. I notice that too with another book i had purchased from Booksonboard, epub file. it reflowed better on Nook

Not-so-like: Cant seem to delete files on the reader without tethering to computer.
- Cant seem to organise the books. with Sony, calibre processed tags show up as collections. So i can imagine that if you have hundreds of books, it's a bit of a pain to scroll through the titles to find book you want. hope they'd improve that, allow folders or something
- page turn buttons feel a bit stiff, hope that gets better. finger swipe to turn page isn't consistent, in fact it doesnt seem to work most times.
- highlighting also isn't consistent. This isnt major for me, and even with sony 600 (which i had for barely a week and sold bec of screen issues) i didnt find the stylus v responsive, but it might be impt to those doing academic reading.
- inserting memory card is a pain! I can half get the back cover off, but i was afraid to push it, so I havent done it. Fortunately on board memory is generous .. but still i'd like to just get that done. Again wish they made it as intuitive as Sony - just card slots on the side, simple

In short anyway the not-so-likes to me aren't major as it's a great reading device. No regrets! Ability to use wall paper and screen savers gives it this fun element too. Now i hope my cover arrives today so I can take my Nook around!

Hi - update is done manually. Just download file, drag and drop to your nook folder w Nook connected to commputer, disconnect and that's it.. Thanks - hope you enjoy yours too!

Hey guys!

Been reading from pg 1 and I'm liking what I'm reading about the nook! I think I'm getting on directly from B&N cos there are no local eBay sellers selling the nook right now.

Mainly, I'm concerned about the shipping costs. What did all of you pay if you bought the nook from B&N directly via vPost or any other shipping services? Which do you recommend?

Would really appreciate it if you guys could give me your input!! :) Thanks!

Hi i got mine also directly from b&n. I believe I did see the ebay seller, at that time she sold a few Sony units, but i felt it was too expensive. b&n price about US$259. domestic shipping to Oregon vpost centre was free. The base charge for vpost is S$13 and the item weight charge was about $8 or $10. I thought that was v reasonable. No gst bec item came below s$400.

Anyway been playing with my Nook. A rather frustrating thing. I managed to get the back cover off (watch b&n video on it, there's a knack to it).. And installed 8 gb microsd. I dont know if any of you has done that, but on my unit the slot for the microsd is not v secure. So during the day, i was startled when it said only 400mb capacity, and sometimes even "no card installed''. I tried a couple of times again last night and sometimes the computer will detect a memory slot, sometimes not. In the end, this morning I had to fix it with scotch tape! And that seems to work. Fortunately anyway the onboard memory of 2 gb is really generous, and who is going to instal thousands of books when you have no way to organise it..

But the other curious thing, when you open up the back, there is a sim card there - must be at&t US 3g which doesnt work here. I wonder if we can put our own sim card? I havent tried bec i don't have the right screwdriver. Has anyone tried? or maybe device itself is locked to use US network, just like early editions of iphone?

On battery life, it isn't v good compared to Sony. Blame the colour dual screen for that. Yest i started day with almost full charge at least 95%. By night time, it was about 60% and I hadn't even read v much. My sony 300 I've had for about 5-6 weeks. I believe it arrived with full charge, I havent even had to charge again! And that's almost daily reading... (makes me wonder if something wrong with battery indicator!)
