Better don't buy cheap cameras from retail

total cost depends on how many cameras you want to install, what resolution of the cameras and how long the duration for it to be kept (harddisk size) and the length per camera point and what cable used. a 4mp camera with a 4mp dvr with installation probably around $700 on average i guess, of course you can look online for those cheap china cameras and dvr but then you have to DIY but then I suggest you get reputable brands with no security issue one.

I agree. There are several considerations before you buy a CCTV camera. I suggest invest in those durable ones from Hikvision. They have better resolution and yet the price is comparable to those you find in challenger like dlink, samsung. I installed those cheap dlink wireless ones before. Guess what? It's just stop working for a few months, and have to resetup. Frustrating especially when something happen and you cannot see the video recording. Any idea how long can we keep the videos recording? Need hard disk storage anot? Any good reliable brands to recommend?

I think 2 weeks is good enough if you have small storage space. Because anything bad happened, you should discover it within a few days. Otherwise, 1 month retention is recommended.

With installation is ok depending on the area covers (wiring cost).
