Work for kids and slower cyclists (under 25km/h).

Think perhaps even 25km/h also fast. Its more for cycling as a leisure, sight seeing, those weekend cyclist who once in a blue moon come out cycle where everything is new and wow to them. Not really for serious cycling, especially cycling to get to places on a daily basis.

Roads are packed and pressed with heavy machinery to ensure certain standard of levelness and smoothness. Which allow for higher speed travel at relative safety. Thus relatively comfortable to travel on even for vehicle without shock absorber.

But don't think cycling path, pavement and such got go through such effort. Alot often bumpy. And they often can be non continuous. Where there can be sudden rise or fall when connect or intersect with other surfaces. Thus quite unpleasant, if not unsafe to ride on when going at speed.

Imagine normal bicycle ride on daily basis under such rougher condition. How to take it. Don't say those road bicycle which is even more sensitive to such rough condition. The road is still more ideal, since it build for heavy vehicle travel.

Also, think if travel the road on bicycle alot will know, typical road side near the curb tend are more uneven and have alot of debris, obstacle, glass shards even. Often need to siam here and there. Thus can understand why some cyclists tend prefer not to ride too close to the left. Especially those road bicycle.

Most of the people I know and my group are good cyclists.

Good or not is relative. I am sure the bunch who got caught for breaching the rules feel that they are good cyclists and it's the rules that are badly made. Not that they are bad cyclists.

Mr Lawrence Choo, 45, founding member of cycling enthusiast groups 10101010 and Faber X, suggested that the guideline for motorists to adhere to a minimum distance of 1.5m when passing cyclists on roads be passed into law, so that it can be enforced like the group cycling rules.

He added that drivers should learn that cyclists also have a right to be on the roads.

Mr Kiki Matthias Cheng, founder of cycling enthusiast group Riding Kakis (Singapore), said it may be more effective to influence cyclists to become role models who “walk the ground” and advocate safer cycling practices within their cycling groups.

The 52-year-old operations director added that this could help “activate” the cycling community in spreading good cycling practices, compared with a top-down approach through law enforcement.

Mr Khaw and Mr Ng both suggested building more dedicated cycling infrastructure, such as cycling lanes that allow road users to give cyclists the right of way.
