Got mine about 2 weeks ago. After two weeks of usage, below are what I think of this model.

Here is my 640m specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66 GHz/2MB L2 Cache)
  • OS: Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
  • Hard Drive: 120 GB SATA
  • Screen: 14.1" WXGA
  • Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
  • RAM: 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM @667 MHz (2 x 512MB)
  • Optical Drive: 8X internal DVD-+RW
  • Battery: 6-cell lithium ion
  • Wireless: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG mini card
  • Weight: not sure but is lighter than my HP NX6110 (which is about 2.8Kg)
  • Ports/Slots: 1 IEEE 1394 (FireWire), 4 Universal Serial Bus (USB 2.0), 5-in-1 removable memory card reader, VGA monitor out port, S-video out, RJ-45 Ethernet LAN, RJ-11 modem, ExpressCard 54mm, headphone/speaker jack
  1. It is light as compared to my previous lappy, a HP NX6110 (which is about 2.8kg).
  2. The white trim on the side of the casing may get dirty with constant handling but that can be easily wipe off with a damp cloth.
  3. The sound/graphics (both integrated) are sufficient for most works and watching movies or listening to MP3. I am not sure what type of games it can/cannot play as I am not a gamer.
  4. The model I purchased is a Core 2 Duo, I have tried using Nero to encode and burn a DVD and at the same time using Photoshp Elements for pictures editing. Both applications run quite smoothly.
  5. The keyboard/touchpad are good in term of comfort and usability.
  6. This lappy run much cooler and quieter than my previous one (HP NX6110)
  7. Battery life is about 3~4 hours each charge on the 6-cell battery.
I have no benchmarks to show as I have not perform any, the above are based on my usage of this lappy for the past two weeks.

Been monitoring the 640m since Dec and notice the same old marketing pattern.

Using the "high end" 640m which cost ~ $1800 as reference which offers
C2D 1.66 Ghz ,1 GB ram plus 2 or 3 yrs service warranty ( forgotten abt the full terms)

This is how their offers had been running.

Week 1....they will give free HDD upgrade to 120 GB but delivery fee is needed
Week 2,,,,they will waive delivery charges,,but HDD is only 80 GB ( this week's promotion)

Let's see what will be the CNY and March IT show's promotion will be.

Thanks for the review, I think u can always to add more RAM and HDD in the future. The facts is i feeling that Dell always overcharged for the upgrading of RAM and HDD, anyone agree bout it?

And another question is can the 1.66C2D pairing with GMA950 can handle the Vista aero glass effects?

Also what's the diff. between with truelife display and without truelife display?
Anyone can help?

Truelife resolution = 1440 x 900 (glossy only)

Non-truelife resolution = 1280 x 768(or 720) * Cannot remember liao... (Matte Only)

Yeah, Dell charges a big premium for their parts. I wanted to upgrade to 1gig

and Dell service centre said it'd cost me about $360 -$380 fo the new RAM. It doesn't include installation costs either.

Kingston is selling theirs for about half the price.

I'm going to go to Sim Lim next week and just buy the Kingston RAM and ask the shop guy to install it for me on the spot- just to make sure its a-ok.

You can also go to Memory World (Funan) 5/F; and ask Darren to install it for you.

Lifetime warranty.

which is actually better? upgraded 640m or the XPS M1210 minimum upgrade? Also how much RAM do you really need (not want) to have a smooth operation of the new Windows Vista?

I'm running Vista Home Premium with Aero on my XPS M1210 with 7400 Go...

I'm beginning to love Vista more than XP... Everything is so nice and smooth!
