any1 encounter yr notebook hdd kena locked out by some sorta security pw whre by w/o that pw your notebk is rendered useless. can go pass bios and cmos but can't boot into winxp. using lattitude d600

Hi Vamp or other 700m users,

I am seriously looking at the 700m. Did you guys do any upgrades??

I did a check by upgrading to 1.8 and 8 cell batt etc.. the costs is about $2.5k, any other notebook with the same config cheaper price?

My reuqirements are very simple.. light and fast for work purposes,, not gaming.

I got my 700m recently. Should not be so expensive. Really. Changing the primary battery from 4-cell to 8-cell and taking the 1.8 chip, the package only cost about $2100. Do check again. Did you order online? And there are two default configurations. A weaker one (725/735/745) and a better one (745/755). Take the 745/755 default configuration. Upgrading to 1.8 from the first default configuration would be more expensive.

I just checked the website. Taking the 745/755 as default, base speed is 1.8. Changing the primary battery to 8-cell, it only costs $2090. Even upgrading from the weaker configuration will only cost about $2150. DVD drives, etc. are extra though, but it isn't that expensive (DVD drive $120, HDD upgrade $70)

I'ved used the 700m as my primary machine for the past 3 months (use a wireless keyboard and Dell 2005FP when at home). Its very fast for its size (can't game cause of integrated video) with a 1.8GHz Pentium M processor. Upgraded the hard drive to 7200rpm hitachi travelstar and it makes a big difference from the standard 5400rpm drive. The screen is nice but it seems to attract dust like mad!

Very good for watching movies, and working on 2 docs on the go. You pretty much have to go with the 8 cell batt to have a decent life. (4hrs + working on docs and light use) Less when playing movies and download multiple torrents.

Its not the prettiest (Vaios are nice looking but prone to hardware failure) nor the sturdiest (ibm x40s are strong as heck even for their minute size), nor even the lightest (for an ultraportable its a bit on the heavy size) but it is the cheapest. Together with Dell's warranty, its a pretty good purchase.

I would say its excellent for school and light business use. Before buying a Dell though, its always good to go to a kiosk to have a look at the actual laptop. I think theres one in suntek city.

I agree.. it is quite a good system only bad thingy is that the battery pack seems to get in the way. but overall performance it good.... Mine has a upgraded 2ghz and changed to 8cell only cost me 2500. may be you want to check again

Been thinking about other combinations... Haizzz the more I think the more confused I get...

1. What would you guys recommend:

a. 1.6Ghz with 1GB Ram

OR

b. 1.8GHz with 512 Ram

Which would be a better option?? 1.6 with 1 gb more expensive.

*** Man the dell ram very ex. If get from SLS cheaper rite?

2. What casing did you guys get? The original one from Dell?

u shld consider your needs. do you -want- that extra 512mb ram? or do you -need- the extra 200mhz? a student user like me, i'll go for option 2.

Guess I just do not to do an upgrade in the next couple of years and yet have a reasonably fast ntbook. Speed, I need speed but not for gaming. But with the 1gb ram, should be able to do gaming rite?

Actually, if possible, go for option 2, then try to increase your RAM by adding/replacing a RAM stick later. Remember, the chip cannot be replaced, but you can buy more RAM. Meanwhile, try to tweak your system so that the strain on the RAM is not that great. Say, tweak your display, avoid resource hog programs like Norton (it's hard to avoid Windows), don't run too many programs at once, use resource-lite programs, etc.

However, if you are in a hurry to use your computer for memory-intensive programs, then take option 1. But remember your system would probably be capped, since to increase RAM above 1GB for laptops is kinda difficult and your processor speed is fixed.

Gaming-wise, Integrated Graphics 2 is not really THAT bad. It is actually capable of playing quite a few games. No 3D of course. But who wants to play 3D (or many games, for that matter) on a tiny 12.1" screen? Not me, for sure. Especially when I'm already used to bigger screens. I'm already aiming to get a 19/21" CRT or 19" LCD

the extra ram wont help ur gaming that much but it will certainly boost overall system performance.
