hi,

currently considering whether to buy dell... cos the current web price of 510m they are offering cannot be ignored easily.... just wondering whether anyone can provide any user feedback with this model...

a) its reliability.... cos I am rather worried about laptop failure
b) Is dell maintenance service that very notorious????...(with the 9x5 next business day 3yr warranty thrown in... the cost is only roughly 200 lesser than IBM R-series with the same warranty period, albeit dell has more ram....)

The 510 series is pretty reliabl so far with no problems.
Have not sent it to service centre so far. No problems at all.
As for sucky customer service, there are always a few such cases for each brand.

yeah darren, i really hope so..

the 700m i could have ordered online would have;

1.8ghz
1024mb (2x512mb) sdram
80gb hard drive
dvd+/-rw combo drive (free upgrade offer online)
802.11 wireless card (free upgrade offer online)
one 4-cell battery
one 8-cell battery
free delivery (online bonus)

with the $500 online rebate, the final damage was about $2.4k.. not bad i feel for the price.

i really wish this IT show would offer something close or better, instead of free thumbdrives or deluxe carry cases, no offence.. well, we'll find out next month..

anyway, thanks darren. great day ahead, cheers! :)

Hey blackbulb, my config is pretty close to what you are going to get.

Dell 700M
1.8GHz Centrino
2 x 256mb PC2700 RAM
60gb Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM harddrive
8x DVD+/- RW Dual Drive (ND-6100 flashed to ND-6500)
Dell 1350 Wireless 802.11b
Two x 8 cell batteries.

I would suggest u drop the 4 cell. It looks nice, but operation time drops to slightly below 2hrs with it. Also forgo the 80gb drive and go for the 7200RPM drives. Changing the drive made a huge performance difference for me.

I find myself not using the internal DVD burner but going with an external NEC ND-3520 cause the burn speed and quality is usually better. Plus prospective 700m buyers beware, the screen attracts dust incredibly quickly. Have to wipe with soft chammy every couple of days. Also as with most ultraports, got very narrow viewing field.

If u got friends in state, might want to get them to buy it for u. 3yr dell warranty is internationally transferable and its much cheaper.

hi ordway,

didn't know dell offer 7200rpm hard disk options online, it sounds so much better than the standard 4200rpm drives. thanks for the info!

1gb ram is still the least i am hoping for, while the internal dvd burner would just be an additional bonus that i can do with or without. a 4cell would be enough for me when i'm giving presentations. 8cell would be my choice no doubt where power points are not available during work. :)

did you get your 700m from states? cheers.

u should opt for a 8cell for all occasions. 4 cells runs down too fast.
