Just received my Dell XPS M1530.
Overall, extremely pleased. Originally Dell informed me of a Jan 1st delivery, but suddenly called me last Fri to inform me if they could deliver on Sat! I shrieked YES! of course... And to think I ordered it just the week before...
My findings:
Pros:
Striking design
Brushed aluminium base, and similiar touchpad
love that touch screen controls (sound, play stop etc)
Nifty remote control to use with WMP (or Windows media centre)
8600m GT comes with DDR3 memory (at 700Mhz) instead of slower DDR2 (400Mhz) on previous Inspiron
superb folder to hold the XPS paper manual & other stuffs
nifty XPS soft cleaning LCD cloth
free Creative in-ear phones (with carrying case and 3 sized ear buds)
9-cell Lion batt supposedly rated for 4 hrs use (yet to verify this)
simple and elegant XPS carrying Notebook case
HDMI output (not sure if its ver 1.3a compatible)
Dual microphone array
Dual headphone jacks (this is excellent feature)
Dell Media direct (no need to boot into vista to playback Dvds or listen to audio)
Can be improved upon:
9 cell LiOn protrudes downwards, hence raising the height (behind) which the notebook sits upon (i thought the 9 cell batt would be flushed, but its not)
Dell doesn't have the option to purchase the 9-cell batt IN ADDITION the std 6 cell batt (I would have gone for that option)
only 3 x USB 2.0 ports. A notebook of this size should incorporate at least 4 USB ports
crappy VGA output (in addition to the HDMI) - should have incorporated a Mini-DVI (and accompanying mini-DVi -> DVI adapter)
slot-loaded DvD not as 'silent' to use compared to the ones on the MacBook Pro
Not as slim as the MacBook Pro - it's thicker at the back and tapers down (the front is as slim, though)
My specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500
2 x 1GB DDR2-667 SDRAM
250GB SATA HDD (Hitachi)
Black tuxedo color
GeForce 8600M GT 256MB graphics
9 cell LiOn batt
Rest are standard
Got it at a sale price of S$1,890 with delivery. For this price I rate it ***** EXCELLENT AWARD product of 2007!
Grabbed interest installment plan with credit card, at the end paying only approx $160/mth for 12 mths...
