The explanation I heard for using 40 oil instead of 20 or 30 is because engine wear is higher in sg due to the stop-start traffic conditions here.

Most people don't care only look at FC and want to feel woo woo. :o

Shell EO is decent lah. The engine won't explode don't worry. Better to use a decent EO than not doing EO change regularly. Ferrari F1 also use Shell. :s13:

Lolzz not fearing it will explode actually.
Sure, will not dig into it ba.

Not going to pretend to be an expert on engine oil, but going by that thought, everybody should be running 50-weight oil then, no?

I won't disagree with better-safe-than-sorry, heck I'm using 30-weight oil on my 20-weight specced engine myself. But I don't think any benefits of a 40-weight over a 30-weight (at least, in my case specifically) are enough to justify the higher FC.

I think these are practices that go back to the old days where mineral oil was more common.

And on the subject of old practices, how many of you still believe that the first servicings of a brand new car (1k, 5k, 10k) must be on mineral oil?

In my humble opinion, 30 weight is sufficient. 40 weight is kinda overkill unless you are running a FI setup or tracking very hard.

Brand new cars come with mineral oil. The purpose of changing out the mineral oil is because consumers like to use synthetic oils to prolong their servicing intervals. If you like to service every 5k or less, you can use mineral oil too no harm.

It is not as if mineral oil is harmful to your engine, it just have different properties. :)

Recently just switched to LiquiMoly, previously used FK massimo.
LiquiMoly seems to have slightly better response n lighter. Both 5w40. Engine idling seems to be more stable but could be due to engine flush.
Currently still monitoring but I think Castrol and Shell EO is equally good enough for day to day usage in Singapore.

Been using Shell Helix Ultra. Pretty good, smooth and relatively quiet engine.

Driving a small car

Used Shell, Toyota, amsoil and redline, all 5w 40

shell very thick, good for protection but not good for fc

toyota, i think it is manufacture by idemitsu, good for day to day usage.

amsoil, most light, it get very rough after 5k mark

redline, still using, similar to toyota but abit lighter, rough after 7k mark.

as long you use a decent oil, and change oil every 5k for mineral and 10k for syn, i think you are ok, unless you always redline your car or track.

Nothing much. Just means it's made to meet the specs required of European cars manufacturers e.g. BMW LL-01, VW 502/505 00, MB 229.3/5 etc.

Japanese cars have much lower criteria (mostly only need to meet API-SL/M).

okay thanks. so we don't anticipate anything happening if we put into a Jap/Korea car lah ah.....

won't have anything bad happening. If anything, it indicates its a good quality oil, and you can actually push to 15K-km oil change cycle. Been using oils with at least LL-01 / MB 229.3 on my Jap car.
If you get one with LL-04/MB 229.5, you will get better fuel consumption.

Most oils that meet european standards now meets API-SN as well.
